Eva Longoria's "Desperate Housewives" character is ready to do a little bit of detective work.

When the hit ABC series returns to finish out its winter season Sunday, Longoria's Gaby grills her "pathetic booze-hound" husband, Carlos (Ricardo Chavira), for details surrounding the death of Detective Chuck Vance.

Photos from Us: How Longoria bounced back after divorce

"After you checked out of rehab, you got in the car. Where did you go?" she implores him in this exclusive preview clip from Sunday's episode.

Unable ? or unwilling ? to recall the events of his prior night out, Carlos plays coy with Gaby. "Chuck's dead and you think I did it?!" he shoots back.

"You were upset and drinking. He was hit on Lake Street. That's only a few blocks from the rehab center," Gaby tells him. "The police are looking for witnesses, trying to find the car."

Watch more of the video above as Gaby concocts what she believes to be a foolproof plan to see if her hubby could be caught red-handed.

Apple saw record sales this holiday season, 12 times the amount of activations on Christmas Day

December 27, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Apple saw record-setting sales this holiday season,?according?to?Localytics. So well, that 12.5 times more iOS devices were activated over Christmas than past weekends. For comparison sake: there were?21 times more iPods compared to 14 times more iPhones. The iPods were most likely gifted to younger children who do not yet have a cell phone. At any rate? there were many people enjoying iOS devices on Christmas Day.

Apple is said to have another record setting quarter after a very?successful?fiscal Q4 for the company.?The last earnings report?said?Apple claimed $28.27 billion in revenue and saw record-setting Mac and iPhone sales. The holiday quarter is expected to be even better.

Apple is set to have its best year ever in its App Store with approximately 10 billion downloads in 2011, along with a record-setting holiday season.?That estimate doubles collective downloads from the three years prior, according to research firm Flurry.?The report noted the Android Market hit 10 billion cumulative downloads in December, up from 3 billion total downloads in May 2011.

Flurry also backs up Localytics claim and said Christmas Day 2011s activations crushed Christmas Day 2010s by almost 2.5 times. This year, 6.8 million iOS devices were activated, while last year?saw 2.8 million device activations?a 140 percent growth. We are looking forward to hearing what Apple has to say in late January.

In comparison to Android?

Apple saw similar sales. Interestingly, the sales for both platforms differentiate between region? as seen in the graph below:

Globe-trotting turtle returns to sea after long rehab

A world-traveling sea turtle found stranded in the Netherlands is back home in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday after three long years of rest and rehabilitation.

The animal, an endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle, was found frigid and near-dead off the coast of the Netherlands in 2008, thousands of miles from the Gulf waters these turtles call home. It was dubbed Johnny Vasco de Gama by its European rescuers.

Marine biologists suspect Johnny became caught in cold currents and was "cold-stunned," a condition that shuts down internal organs and can kill sea turtles. Staff members of the Rotterdam Zoo stabilized the ailing turtle and sent him to the Ocean?rio de Lisboa aquarium in Portugal the following summer.

"He did just fine," Mote spokesman Hayley Rutger told LiveScience.

Johnny is fitted with a satellite tag that will help researchers keep an eye on his next amazing journey. Mote has tracked more than 120 sea turtles since 2005, according to Tony Tucker, the head of the laboratory's Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program.

Virginia primary: Was it so hard for Perry and Gingrich to get on the ballot?

Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry failed to collect enough signatures to get on the primary ballot in Virginia. Yes, the state has tough rules, but other candidates have managed to register.

At first blush, the failure of Republican presidential contenders Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry to get on the primary ballot in Virginia suggests structural failures for both campaigns, but it also sheds light on the state?s primary ballot requirements, which are the most stringent in the nation.

On Saturday, the Republican Party of Virginia issued tweets that said neither former House Speaker Gingrich nor Texas Governor Perry had obtained the 10,000 valid signatures required to get on the party?s March 6 primary ballot.

The Gingrich campaign responded at first by saying it would launch a write-in campaign before learning that it is not allowed for presidential primaries in the state. National Campaign Director Michael Krull promised via Facebook on Saturday that the campaign ?will make all other deadlines? and said it ?will continue to learn and grow.?

Mr. Krull also compared the situation to Pearl Harbor, saying: ?we have experienced an unexpected setback, but we will regroup and refocus with increased determination, commitment and positive action.?

The roadblock presents the other Republican candidates an opportunity to show both campaigns are ?foolish and disorganized,? says Carl Tobias, a University of Richmond law professor.

?It speaks volumes to me about the particular organizational skills of the candidates,? Mr. Tobias told the Los Angeles Times Saturday. ?It?s hard for me to understand how they could miss this opportunity.?

Indeed, at a rally held last week in Arlington, Va., Gingrich admitted his campaign was not prepared for his recent surge in popularity in the polls.

?We weren?t ready for it yet because we don?t have the structure and we don?t have the money to compete at that level, so we had to scramble a little bit,? Gingrich said.

In fact, Gingrich is leading among Virginia Republicans, according to a recent survey by Quinnipiac University, taken Dec. 13-19. Among the 489 registered Republican voters, 30 percent said they were planning to vote for Gingrich, with 25 percent for Romney, 9 percent for Paul and 6 percent for Perry.

Not getting on the Virginia ballot is particularly embarrassing for Gingrich, considering it is now his home state. Gingrich, who was born in Pennsylvania and served two decades in Congress as a representative from Georgia, now resides in McLean.

Egypt court ends virginity tests on female detainees (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? An Egyptian court ordered on Tuesday that forced virginity tests be stopped on female detainees in military prisons.

The case was filed by Samira Ibrahim, a woman who said the army forced her to undergo a virginity test in March after she was arrested during a protest in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

Human rights organizations say that there have been many other such tests by the military.

"The court orders that the execution of the procedure of virginity tests on girls inside military prisons be stopped," said judge Aly Fekry, head of Cairo Administrative court. Hundreds of activists inside the courtroom cheered after the ruling was read out.

Wendy's goes gourmet in Japan

By Sean O'Neill, Budget Travel

Today, fast-food chain Wendy's, known for its cheap staples of meat bombs, unveiled the Foie Gras Rossini Burger at its new restaurant in Tokyo.?The price is 1280 yen, or nearly $17 at today's exchange rates.

Other surprises in the new "Japan Premium" line-up of burgers include the Avocado Wasabi Burger, the Chili Burger, and the Truffle and Porcini Grilled Chicken Sandwich.

No other Wendy's in the world has foie gras, the liver of a specially fattened goose or duck. The burgers bulge and glisten with oil like sumo wrestlers.

The fancy burgers are sold at a gleaming new store in the Ometsando district of Japan's capital, famed for its fashion shops. The location is a bit away from the main drag though; find it on a map, here.

The store is Wendy's first of 100 planned locations for the country, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The fast-food empire bowed out of Japan a couple of years ago due to falling profits, reports AFP.

The new menu items can be seen on the Japanese website for Wendy's. There's no Baconator Double on it, sadly.

Kari and Matt?s La Jolla Scripss wedding was filled to the brim with some incredibly vibrant wedding details that we know you are going to love. Including some of the cutest wedding place mats we have ever seen.

This stylish seaside wedding did not happen on its own, it took a whole lot of talented vendors to make it super fabulous. Luxe Events coordinated and styled, Joielala Photographie snapped all these pretty pictures and 10.11 Makeup made everyone look pretty. Be sure to see this entire Seaside San Diego Wedding in the full wedding gallery.

From Luxe Events

Kari has an extremely fresh sense of style.?? She is drawn to vibrant colors and modern patterns.? So I set out to design a wedding layered in colorful bold patterns.? We let go of traditional ideas of what ?matches? and became playful with the design choices.???? I?d call the wedding design ?Layered Chic?. Once we embraced this concept the plan fell into place.? We picked three fabulous patterns that would complement each other.? We brought the patterns to center stage through unique wedding elements. When we could not find a charger that was just the right color or pattern I came up with the idea to create a stylish placemat.?? Enlisting Brightly Designed to take our pattern decor to the next level, she designed super-cool placemats including quotes from favorite songs.? Each table had one of the three patterned placemats.? In addition we made paper vase wraps for the centerpieces.?? While we loved the blue and green colors I felt something whimsical was missing, and we added the slightest touch of hot pink.?? The pattern and color story carried through from guest book poster, signature drink flags, hanging tissue balls, dangling ceremony flowers, signage above the head table, vase wraps, placemats, lighting, linens and that wow-factor cake.?? The end result was a wedding so very Kari and Matt- bold and beautiful.

Madison, Eugene Mayors Make Community-Based Rose Bowl Wager

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin and Eugene, Ore., Mayor Kitty Piercy have made a friendly wager on the Rose Bowl that will make either community a winner pending the outcome of the Wisconsin Badgers and Oregon Ducks match up.

"We wanted to develop a wager that could benefit our entire community and particularly those most in need," Soglin said in a news release.

Each mayor has committed to privately raising $500 if their team loses. The money will then be used for tools for Habitat for Humanity organizations in either Madison or Eugene.

"Each of us will raise the money privately and no city funds are involved," Soglin said. "This is a great program and we both want to support it."

Both mayors said they are aware of the growing need for shelters and services for the homeless. They each credit Habitat for Humanity for the work it is doing. But each also is rooting on their favorite teams in the Rose Bowl.

"I am looking forward to our local workers benefiting from new tools because I truly expect our Badgers to win," Soglin said.

Piercy replied, "In your dreams Mayor Soglin, but seriously, whoever benefits from this wager serves those in need in our country and that?s what it?s all about."

The Badgers and the Ducks kick off the 2012 Rose Bowl on Jan. 2 at 4 p.m.

New Google Easter Eggs for the Holidays

Google gets into the holiday spirit with two new Easter eggs

Just in time for the holiday season, Google has introduced two new Easter eggs for users to enjoy. For one, simply type ?Let it snow? (without the quotes) into the search bar and you?ll be treated to a light flurry and quick frosting of your computer screen.

The screen frosts over in about 10 seconds or so. When this happens, you can use your mouse cursor to trace images onto the screen itself. (There?s also a ?defrost? button in case you want to quickly clean the page off.)

In their report on the story, CNET mentioned that this neat little holiday treat is powered by HTML5 technology.(1) A worthwhile sidenote for all the design engineers out there.

The other egg is displayed when you type the word ?Hanukkah? into the Google search bar. Doing this brings up a string of lights on the search results page:

In case you?re not familiar with the Google Easter egg series, the company has introduced several fun surprises of this ilk throughout the years. They?re not released publicly; rather, they?re found via the hundreds of millions of people who use the search engine machine daily.

Some of the more popular eggs include:

The barrel roll

If you?re not like me, and don?t get motion sickness just by spinning around once in your desk chair, type ?do a barrel roll? into the Google search bar and enjoy the ride:

Google Easter egg for the phrase ?do a barrel roll.?

Askew

Things are set off just a bit when you Google search the word ?askew? . . .

Google Easter egg for the word ?askew.?

Gravity

This one?s pretty fun. Enter ?Google gravity? into the Google search bar and click ?I?m feeling lucky.? The entire search pane, buttons, and logo will all fall down to the bottom of the page. They?re still usable, and you can also move them around by clicking, dragging, and releasing them with your cursor:

Google Easter egg for the word ?Google gravity.?

Chuck Norris

Google hopped on the Chuck Norris joke bandwagon with this amusing little egg. Type in the question, ?Where is Chuck Norris,? and click ?I?m feeling lucky.? You?ll be taken to NoChuckNorris.com, which displays the image below:

Google Easter egg for the question ?Where is Chuck Norris.?

Did you notice the extra option that lets you search ?Pages from Chuck?s Beard?? ?

Donations sought for stained-glass tribute to troops

The final push is under way to raise money for a stained-glass window for the 82nd Airborne Division Chapel honoring the service of paratroopers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"It is during this time of year of giving unto others that I ask for all of your assistance in meeting the completion of our project," Steve England wrote in a letter this month to 82nd paratroopers, veterans, families and friends.

England is president of the 82nd Airborne Division Memorial Association, a nonprofit organization. He retired from the Army after serving as command sergeant major of the division and Fort Bragg and the 18th Airborne Corps.

"We all realize that these are very hard times for everyone with the economy being what it is," England said in an interview. "We still feel this is a worthwhile effort."

The chapel is under construction on Ardennes Street and scheduled for completion in late 2012, he said in the letter. The window is about 8 feet wide and 14 feet tall, and the color themes harmonize with other windows, England said.

Stained-glass windows in division chapels honor the service of 82nd soldiers in all conflicts.

"We've had two conflicts at once, and we're going to put both of them in the same window," England said.

The division chaplain and brigade combat teams gave input for the themes, England said.

The left half of the window depicts Iraq with C-17 cargo aircraft at the top. Crossed swords represent Baghdad.

"They use patrolling as the theme," England said The soldiers in the windows wear DCUs, the desert camouflage uniform of earlier years, and transition in the windows to ACUs, the more current Army combat uniform.

"All the windows are done in a certain theme," England said. "In the top portions of the windows, you have the latest technology."

Soldiers are portrayed in the middle of the window. The bottom of the window has a religious theme.

The right shows scenes from Afghanistan with helicopters at the top.

There is a nondenominational quote from the Psalms in the lower right window.

Many donors contribute on behalf of a loved one, England said. People donating $82 or more will receive a certificate with their name from the association, England wrote.

Heavy snow hits NM, closes roads, cancels flights (AP)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? A winter storm blast has blanketed New Mexico, closing parts of major highways and canceling flights for holiday travelers.

Heavy snow and high winds struck the region Thursday and are expected to continue through late Friday.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation closed parts of Interstation 40, around Albuquerque and westbound from Tucumcari to the Torrance County line.

Large portions of Interstate 25 from Truth or Consequences to Las Cruces also were closed and authorities were urging motorists to seek shelter in hotels.

The National Weather Service reported Friday that parts of New Mexico received 16 inches of snow, stranding dozens of motorists.

In Colorado, operations at the Denver airport were getting back to normal after a storm that brought about 10 inches of snow.

French bid to outlaw genocide denial outrages Turkey

French lawmakers easily passed a measure Thursday to make it a crime to deny the mass killings of Armenians in 1915 by Ottoman Turks amounted to genocide. Turkey swiftly retaliated, ordering its ambassador home and halting official contacts, including some military cooperation.

Within hours of the lower house vote on the bill, which would penalize those who deny the Armenian genocide, Turkey meted out a severe punishment of its own.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a series of retaliatory measures, recalling the country's ambassador to France and suspending joint military maneuvers and restricting French military flights.

Turkey, a NATO member, is a strategic ally of France and valued trading partner, and the moves diminish ties at a particularly crucial time. Paris and Ankara are both deeply involved in international issues from the uprising in Syria to Afghanistan.

"We are recalling our ambassador in Paris to Ankara for consultations," Erdogan said.

"As of now, we are canceling bilateral level political, economic and military activities," he said. "We are suspending all kinds of political consultations with France" and "bilateral military cooperation, joint maneuvers are canceled as of now."

'Grave consequences'
It was clear long before the vote ? easily passed with a show of hands ? that France was on a collision course with Turkey. Ankara had threatened to remove Ambassador Tahsin Burcuoglu if French lawmakers did not desist and warned of "grave consequences" to political and economic ties.

Turkey vehemently rejects the term "genocide" for the World War I era-mass killings of Armenians, saying the issue should be left to historians. It contends that France is trampling freedom of expression and that President Nicolas Sarkozy is on a vote-getting mission before April presidential elections.

Successive Turkish governments and the vast majority of Turks feel the charge of genocide is an insult to their nation. Ankara argues that there was heavy loss of life on both sides.

Story: Armenians mourn victims of mass killings by Turks

The French government has stressed that it did not initiate the bill.

An estimated 500,000 Armenians live in France and many have pressed to raise the legal statute regarding the massacres to the same level as the Holocaust by punishing denial of genocide.

"We must not mix freedom of opinion with propaganda," conservative lawmaker Patrick Devedjian, who is of Armenian origin, said before lawmakers in arguing for the measure.

"Would you accept today that Germany denies the Holocaust and that it spreads abroad, to France, a negationist propaganda? No," he said later before journalists. "So why should we accept that from Turkey."

France formally recognized the killings as genocide in 2001, but provided no penalty for anyone denying that. The bill sets a punishment of up to one year in prison and a fine of ?45,000 ($59,000) for those who deny or "outrageously minimize" the killings by Ottoman Turks, putting such action on a par with denial of the Holocaust. The measure will now be debated next year in the Senate.

In Washington, President Barack Obama has stopped short of calling the killings genocide.

The authorities in Yerevan welcomed the vote, Armenia's Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian saying in a statement: "By adopting this bill (France) reconfirmed that crimes against humanity do not have a period of prescription and their denial must be absolutely condemned."

Assassination anniversary
Earlier, about 3,000 French nationals of Turkish origin demonstrated peacefully outside the parliament ahead of the vote, which came 32 years to the day since a Turkish diplomat was assassinated by Armenian militants in central Paris.

"Our ancestors can finally rest in peace," said 75-year-old Maurice Delighazarian, standing outside France's National Assembly. He said his grandparents on both sides were among the victims of the 1915 massacre.

Lawmakers denounced what they called Turkey's propaganda effort in a bid to sway them.

"Laws voted in this chamber cannot be dictated by Ankara," said Jean-Christophe Lagarde, a deputy from the New Center party.

The bill's author said she was "shocked" at the attempt to interfere with the parliament's work.

"My bill doesn't aim at any particular country," Valerie Boyer, a deputy for Sarkozy's conservative UMP party, told lawmakers.

An initial bid to punish denial of the Armenian genocide failed earlier this year, killed by the Senate five years after it was passed by the lower house.

French authorities have stressed the importance of bilateral ties with Turkey and the key role it plays in sensitive strategic issues as a member of NATO, in Syria, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

However, Sarkozy has long opposed the entry into the European Union of mostly Muslim Turkey, putting a constant strain on the two nations' ties.

'Dirty and bloody history'
Turkish authorities have weighed in with caustic remarks about France's past. Erdogan has recalled France's colonial history in Algeria and a 1945 massacre there, as well as its role in Rwanda, where some have claimed a French role in the 1994 genocide.

"Those who do want to see genocide should turn around and look at their own dirty and bloody history," Erdogan said last weekend. "Turkey will stand against this intentional, malicious, unjust and illegal attempt through all kinds of diplomatic means."

Turkey insists the mass killings of Christian Armenians ? up to 1.5 million, historians estimate ? occurred during civil unrest as the Ottoman Empire collapsed, with losses on both sides. Historians contend the Armenians were massacred in the first genocide of the 20th century.

France is pressing Turkey to own up to its history for the sake of "memory" just as the French have officially recognized the role of their state ? the collaborationist Vichy government ? in the deportation of Jews to Nazi death camps during World War II.

In October, Sarkozy visited Armenia and its capital of Yerevan, urging Turkey to recognize the 1915 killings as genocide.

"Turkey, which is a great country, would honor itself by revisiting its history like other countries in the world have done," Sarkozy said.

France, however, took its own time recognizing the state's role in the Holocaust. It was not until 1995 that then-President Jacques Chirac proclaimed France's active role in sending its citizens to death camps. And it was only in 2009 that his historic declaration was formally recognized in a ruling by France's top body, the Council of State.

Researchers from the University of Southampton have contributed to a major international United Nation's (UN) report into the current status of the world's land and water resources for food and agriculture.

Dr Craig Hutton, Professor Mike Clark, both from the University's GeoData Institute, and demographer Dr Fiifi Amoako Johnson contributed as authors as well external editors to the recent United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation publication, 'State of the World's Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture' (SOLAW).

The report notes that with the task of feeding a world population expected to reach 9 billion people by 2050, food production is projected to increase by about 70 per cent globally and nearly 100 per cent in developing countries. This incremental demand for food, together with demand from other competing uses, will place unprecedented pressure on many agricultural production systems across the world. These 'systems at risk' are facing growing competition for land and water resources and they are often constrained by unsustainable agricultural practices.

The University of Southampton team substantially contributed to the development of spatial statistics and mapping of poverty and environmental variables, as well as providing strategic contribution to the overall message of the document.

Dr Craig Hutton, says:

"The first issue of SOLAW, which complements other State of the World reports published regularly by FAO, is intended to inform public debate and policy-making at national and international levels. The University of Southampton now has a substantial international profile in food security, poverty and resource management, particularly in the context of climate change. The GeoData Institute has been working closely with the FAO for a number of years in this field across a number of international settings."

Korean firm accused of illegal US military exports (AP)

CLEVELAND ? A South Korean company has been indicted in Cleveland on allegations it illegally exported infrared technology used by the U.S. military.

Federal authorities said Tuesday that EO System Co. Ltd. and three South Korean citizens are accused of exporting five telescopes from the U.S. to their country in 2005 without required U.S. government approval.

EO System's attorney Don Randolph says he has been in communication with the government about the matter for several years. The Santa Monica, Calif., lawyer says EO System intends to plead not guilty and press on with its defense.

The government says the case is related to that of a former NASA employee in Cleveland who was sentenced in November to 14 months in prison for illegally shipping night-vision rifle scope equipment to South Korean companies.

Rebecca Black tops all other YouTube videos in '11 (AP)

NEW YORK ? Rebecca Black's infamous "Friday" video has topped all other YouTube videos of 2011 with 180 million views.

The Google Inc. video-sharing site announced its most-viewed clips of the year Tuesday.

The 14-year-old Black was turned into a viral video celebrity after her parents paid a production company to make the music video for her. "Friday" became an unlikely, off-key global hit. Because of a legal dispute with Ark Music Factory, the video has had two YouTube incarnations, both of which were tabulated in the year-end count.

The second most popular video was "Ultimate Dog Tease," in which an owner taunts a dog with food and voices its reactions. Third was the "Saturday Night Live" digital short featuring Michael Bolton as a rabid "Pirates of the Caribbean" fan.

Nintendo 3DS tour guides might make the Mona Lisa less underwhelming

Other than wine, cheese and overwhelming apathy, the Louvre stands alone as France's most prized national treasure. It's enormous, it's teeming with art, and it's really old. Starting in March, though, the museum will get an infusion of comparatively new technology, thanks to the Nintendo 3DS. As the AFP reports, Nintendo has agreed to provide the Louvre with some 5,000 pocket consoles, to be offered as digital tour guides for museum patrons. With these devices tucked securely inside their fanny packs, wandering tourists will be able to pinpoint their location within the museum, select themed itineraries, and listen to audio commentary available in seven different languages. The consoles will eventually replace the museum's more traditional audio guides, as part of a wider campaign to bring 21st century technology to the Louvre's 12th century confines. "We are the first museum in the world to do this," Agnes Alfandari, the Louvre's head of multimedia, told the AFP, adding that a slate of dedicated smartphone and tablet apps is also in the works.
