I think we all agree that sending an SMS has many great advantages. It?s discreet, cheaper than a call, it takes less time and it can be sent and received at any time. It?s a perfect way of communication! Numbers are here to prove that we?re obsessed with texting; in 2010, 6.1 trillion SMS were sent ? that?s 192 000 SMS per second!

2012 marks the 20th anniversary of Short Message Service; we thus collected the important milestones of the surprising history of text messages, a communication tool no one predicted to become as important as it is nowadays!

1984: A Finnish engineer named Matti Makkonnen first got the idea for the SMS concept when having lunch with two colleagues in a pizzeria located in Copenhagen, in the context of a conference about the future of mobile communications. His first idea was to develop a very simple messaging system that would work even when the recipient?s device was switched off or out of coverage area.
?
1987: The GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) was created after 13 European countries signed an agreement to develop and deploy a common mobile telephone system across Europe ? a unified, open, standard-based mobile network. Makkonnen?s concept was discussed and adopted at a worldwide GSM conference. Unfortunately for him, he did not patent his invention (and hence did not receive a penny for it?)!

December 1992: The first SMS ever was sent from a personal computer to a mobile phone on the Vodafone GSM network in the UK. It read ?Happy Christmas?

Like a round from Dirty Harry?s massive revolver, the Eastwood buzz ricocheted elsewhere, including at PolicyMic.com (which bills itself as a voice for millennials), where the headline is ?RNC Schedule of Speakers: LIVE Mystery Speaker is Clint Eastwood.?

Eastwood is prominent on the Monitor?s list of five likely mystery men (or women) designed to generate expectation and enthusiasm on the convention floor: Sarah Palin, Donald Trump, Mitch Daniels, a ?ticked-off CEO,? and Eastwood.

But really, Ms. Palin and The Donald have too much baggage and Gov. Daniels ? a decent man and an effective governor ? is too ? well, think Paul Ryan without the pizzazz.

In any case, the official convention speaking schedule for the night includes a slot for ?to be announced? just before Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida introduces Romney.

Although his political image isn?t as hard-edged as the late Charlton Heston's of ?cold, dead hands? pro-gun fame, Eastwood endorsed John McCain in 2008 and has done the same for Romney this year. He?s described President Obama as ?a greenhorn? who ?didn?t have experience in decision-making."

When Republicans speak of ?Dirty Harry,? they usually mean Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada ? the guy who charged that Romney hadn?t paid any taxes for the past decade.

But tonight at least, the reference seems likely to be to the ?make my day? guy himself.

Wolfram Alpha, the ?computational knowledge engine? that quietly handles a large number of queries from Apple?s Siri, launched a new feature today that allows you to quickly get an overview of all your data on Facebook. The new report, says Wolfram CEO Stephen Wolfram, expands Wolfram Alpha?s ?powers of analysis to give you all sorts of personal analytics.? The company plans to expand these reports with new features over time, but they already give you a pretty deep look at your Facebook habits.

The report, for example, shows which words you use most in your status updates, who likes your updates the most, when you use Facebook the most, your app activity and how your friends are connected to each other.

The report also gathers a good amount of data about your friends, including, for example, their marital status, age and gender distribution and lists of the most common names among them. You can also see a specialized report that just focuses on your friend by searching for ?facebook friends.?

I?m not much of a Facebook users, so my report isn?t all that exciting, but thanks to Wolfram Alpha, I now know that 20.8% of my Facebook friends are single, for example, as well as who my oldest and youngest friends on Facebook are. I now also know that my friends live in 20 different countries and that the most common name among my friends is ?Chris.? I have no idea what do with all of this information, but it?s definitely fun to look at these reports.

Motorola RAZR HD global edition hits FCC with LTE included

The global edition of the still-unannounced Motorola Droid RAZR HD, also known as the XT925, was just seen getting FCC approval. This likely won't come as a shocker to many, since this device (alongside its Verizon counterpart) has been the victim of numerous leaks. What we did find as a little surprise, however, was the inclusion of LTE radios, specifically in bands 4 (AWS) and 17 (700MHz). Of course, we're not expecting to see AT&T (the US carrier that utilizes both bands) pick this particular device up -- especially since it recently launched the similarly specced Atrix HD -- but it'll be great for importers. The presence of AWS LTE indicates we'll likely be seeing the XT925 flourish in Canada, and the 2G / 3G bands will certainly make it a prime candidate for sales in other markets around the world. Exelixis says FDA drops panel talks on thyroid cancer drug

(Reuters) - Exelixis Inc said U.S. regulators have dropped an advisory panel discussion on the marketing application for its experimental drug to treat a rare form of thyroid cancer, sending its shares up 6 percent after market.

"It's a positive. That means the committee did not have a big issue or concern on this drug." Maxim Group analyst Echo He told Reuters.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has taken off a discussion on the drug from the agenda of an advisory panel meeting, scheduled on November 8-9, the biotechnology company said.

The review date for the drug, cabozantinib, designed to treat medullary thyroid cancer, however, remains on November 29.

Medullary thyroid cancer, which starts in cells that release a hormone called calcitonin, accounts for about 4 percent of thyroid cancers.

The FDA last month granted a priority review for the drug.

Shares of San Francisco-based Exelixis were up at $4.88 after the bell. They closed at $4.59 on the Nasdaq on Wednesday.

Will Apple's smaller tablet be called the 'iPad Mini'?

iPad Mini? iPad Nano? iPad Air??We don't actually know if Apple is even working on a smaller iPad. All we have to go on are?reports from anonymous sources and leaked parts?which are?allegedly?intended for this tablet. But that won't stop rumors about the devices's name from floating around.

CNET's Lance Whitney points out?that?the folks at Japanese blog Macotakara?? who've had a mixed track record when it comes to Apple rumors???say they've got a source who claims that the rumored tablet will be called?the "iPad Mini."

Apple blogger John Gruber has previously dubbed the device the "iPad Air" in passing, while suggesting that it will be announced in October, instead of sharing the spotlight with the next-generation iPhone in September.

"I don?t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time," Gruber?writes. "The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention ? and it?s in Apple?s interest to keep that attention undiluted."?

AllThingsD's John Paczkowski went with the label "so-called 'iPad Mini'" while explaining that he has "several sources" who confirm that Apple will indeed show off the device in October.?

For what it's worth, we frequently reach out to the folks at Apple and ask them if they're feeling crazy enough to?chit-chat about their upcoming products, but as it's their policy not to address such rumors, we'll have to?keep speculating until Apple sends out invitations to a very special event.?

3 Marines punished for urinating on Taliban corpses

WASHINGTON - The U.S. military on Monday dealt out punishment to three Marines for their roles in urinating on Taliban corpses, and were?expected to announce penalties against six soldiers in the Quran burning incident at Bagram Air Base that ignited deadly protests in Afghanistan.

The Marine Corps announced that three Marines received non-judicial punishment for their roles in urinating on Taliban corpses in Afghanistan as well as for videotaping the incident.

A statement from the Marine Corps said they received the punishment for "violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for their role in the desecration and filming of deceased Taliban that became public in January 2012."

As part of a plea deal, all three Marines pleaded guilty and will receive a permanent mark on their records that will impact any future promotions and re-enlistments.

They were all members of the Third Battalion, Second Marine Regiment or in units that were attached to the "3/2" during their deployment. Their names were not released.?

One non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to a general order by?wrongfully posing for an unofficial photograph with human casualties and urinating on the body of a deceased Taliban soldier, which conduct was prejudicial to good order and discipline.

Another non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to?wrongfully posing for an unofficial photograph with human casualties and?wrongfully video recording the incident.?

A staff non-commissioned officer pleaded guilty to?failing to report the mistreatment of human casualties by other Marines and?making a false official statement to a Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigator about the his knowledge of the video.

At least 2 more Marines are awaiting disciplinary action for their roles in setting a command climate that led to the urinating incident.

The incident took place during a counter-insurgency operation near Sandala, Musa Qala District in Helmand Province, Afghanistan around July 27, 2011.?

The investigation into the Quran burning reportedly found no ill intent on the part of the soldiers so none of the six will face criminal charges. ?The administrative punishment, however, will likely result in the end of their military careers.?

The investigation against one sailor was dropped when it was determined he was simply ordered to drive the truck with the material to the burn site at the base.

The burning of the Muslim holy books in February sparked weeks of protests that led to 30 Afghan deaths. U.S. officials said at the time the books were mistakenly sent along with garbage for disposal after detainees had written messages in them.

According to The Wall Street Journal, officials in Afghanistan were bracing for public demonstration over what might be viewed as lenient punishment of the troops.

Idle Hands: Selling your collaborative novel

To be a writer is to be a salesperson. Writing is a respected profession but no one is going to fall at your feet, begging to publish or even read your work, just because you?ve written something. Once your novel is complete, you will have to sell it yourself. That might initially be to an agent. If and when you?ve gained an agent, you still need to be constantly selling. Your agent will need your help to sell your book to a publisher. Your publisher will need your help to sell your book to the public. Your skills as a salesperson will be required at book launches, readings, book signings, Q&A sessions, workshops, conventions. Don?t be surprised if you end up taking your wares to sell directly to your readership at local libraries and schools. You are selling your book but you are also selling yourself. Even though I find it nauseating to have to think and speak in such terms, you will need to sell yourself as a brand. People want their horror writers to be cool and darkly funny. People want their romance writers to be insightful and personable. People want their science fiction writers to be very, very intelligent. I?m not, for one moment, suggest you pretend to be someone you?re not because that?s just going to end in disaster. I?m suggesting that you accentuate and make more of those aspects of your personality and personal history that relate to your work. If you are an ex-SAS soldier and write thrillers, it would be daft to not mention your past profession in your dealings with others. If you are an ex-SAS soldier and write children?s picture books, it?s probably best to keep quiet about it. Just say you like the great outdoors and travel a lot. Something like that. The issue of branding is very important for collaborative writers. You are a gestalt entity. You are not the sum of your parts. The similarities you share are interesting, the differences between you even more so. If one of you is a Tokyo housewife and the other is a Caribbean pearl diver then that difference will probably have informed your writing and be of great interest to your readership. A poet and a screenwriter. A lawyer and a social worker. French and English. Young and old. Man and woman. To be more than one person is to be interesting. To put it another way, in fiction writing there are thousands of writers out there but only dozens of collaborative writing teams. Collaboration is going to be your Unique Selling Point that separates you from the herd. At conventions, launches and other events the question you are guaranteed to be asked is, ?how do you write a book when there?s two (or three) of you?? It will sell books, if only so people can try to see the joins in the writing where one writer stops and the other takes over. However, in terms of branding, you should also consider whether your writing identity is your true names or a single collaborative pseudonym. The successful British thriller writer, Nicci French, is actually husband and wife team Nicci Gerard and Sean French. Grant Naylor, the writer-creator of SF sitcom, Red Dwarf, is Doug Naylor and Rob Grant. There are numerous reasons for taking this approach and one is perhaps that readers are more comfortable with the notion of one author. A collaboration is not an easy thing and a collaborative work has more scope for being of a poor quality. Multiple authors can make readers suspicious. The name ?Virginia Andrews? is such a powerful selling tool that it serves the publisher?s needs to keep the name going.

Indeed, one advantage of a shared pseudonym is that it can survive the departure of any one of the collaborators. Perhaps you?ve written a novel together under a shared name. If one collaborator vanishes (death, abduction, getting a proper job, etc), at least the other can continue to write further works without the reading public wondering what has happened to the other guy. In fact, new blood can be injected into the collaboration without a change of name. This can continue ad infinitum. Do you know how many people have written under the name of ?Ellery Queen?? If you do, please tell Ellery Queen magazine because even they don?t know. It?s a lot. Handled well, a collaborative pseudonym can create a popular and enduring writing force with a greater output and breadth of writing talent than any individual. A problem of course arises with the question of who the pseudonym belongs to. As a collaborative pair, can you each use it whenever you like or should it only be used when you are working together? Does it belong to you or the publisher? Can it even be sold on? Could it be possible that, twenty years on, different authors will be writing under the same name, claiming to be the ?true? or ?original? author? It has happened with pop bands on numerous occasions. There?s no reason why it can?t happen with writing. Whatever the case, collaboration is an interesting selling point and one you ought to mention in the promotion of your book. Appearing together as a writing pair (or trio or whatever) will draw interest at conventions and festivals. Being a collaborative team can also be of benefit in other forms of self-promotion. On social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, you have the benefit of having a greater number of friends/followers than individuals. Your social circle is wider. You can reach out to a wider audience. You can retweet/like/whatever each other in a way that seems less boastful and self-serving than promoting yourself does. Furthermore, if you have solo works available, you can use this wider network to introduce new readers to your work (and each other?s work). If one of you comes from a romance writing background and the other from a fantasy writing background then there may be a chance for some cross pollination, introducing romance readers to fantasy novels and vice versa. Whether you use a pseudonym or not, whether your collaboration is an exciting mash-up of genres or styles, whether you take advantage of your separate identities to promote your work through social media, you need to make the best use of your collaboration in selling your novel. Your novel won?t sell itself but, as collaborators, you do have advantages (if only superiority of numbers) over the poor solo writer.

There is little question that our nation?s economy continues to struggle. The question remains, why?

Unemployment has been above 8 percent for 41 consecutive months, the longest stretch of high unemployment since the Great Depression. Since 2009, this administration has heaped on more bureaucratic red tape, more burdensome regulations, more complex and overreaching laws and provided more uncertainty regarding the tax code.

Together these factors have created a perfect storm. A storm that?s drowning job creators and keeping them from hiring at a time when we need jobs more than ever before.

This economic downtown has hurt nearly every sector and industry doing business in the United States. However, few industries have felt the effects and few industries want to provide sustainable, well-paying jobs for American workers more than the trade construction contractors that build the American economy one job at a time.

Today?s economic storm continues to rain down on job creators. While these small businesses are eager to help America?s economy grow jobs and once again prosper, another storm front is moving in and there is no relief in sight, which means there are no new jobs in sight for an industry that has lost more than 1.9 million jobs in just four years.

Like thunder, the current administration is unpredictable and does things with a bang.? In 2011 alone, 32 major regulations were implemented, several of which have a direct impact on the construction industry and come with a price tag of $10 billion annually.

Explosion kills at least 19 at Venezuela's biggest refinery

PARAGUANA, Venezuela (Reuters) - A gas leak caused an explosion that killed at least 19 people at Venezuela's biggest oil refinery on Saturday and wounded more than 50 in the OPEC nation's worst industrial accident in recent memory.

The deadly blast follows a string of minor accidents and unplanned stoppages that have afflicted state oil company PDVSA over the last decade, prompting critics to accuse President Hugo Chavez's government of mismanagement.

It was not immediately clear how the blast would affect operations at the 645,000-barrels-per-day (bpd) Amuay facility, which makes up two-thirds of the world's second-largest refinery complex, nor for how long output might be affected.

State TV showed footage of smoke billowing from the refinery as dawn broke, and emergency workers were on the scene.

Stella Lugo, the governor of local Falcon state, said the explosion had also hit homes in the area and that a 10-year-old child was among the dead.

"We are deploying our whole fire service team, all our health team, the whole contingency plan on the orders of Comandante Chavez to first of all care for the people affected by this emergency," Lugo told state TV.

Located on a peninsula overlooking the Caribbean sea in the west of Venezuela, Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refining Center, the second-biggest refinery complex in the world with an overall capacity of 955,000 bpd.

"A cloud of gas exploded," Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez told state TV. "It was a significant explosion. There is appreciable damage to infrastructure and to houses opposite the refinery."

Both Ramirez and Lugo said the situation was under control several hours after the explosion at about 1 a.m. local time.

"There's no risk of another explosion," Lugo said.

Ivan Freites, a union leader at the Paraguana complex, said foam had been used to control the blaze.

PDVSA has struggled with repeated refinery problems in recent years, crimping its capacity and its ability to fulfill ambitious expansion plans. Power faults, accidents and stoppages for maintenance have also curbed exports of oil products.

In 2010, there was a massive fire at a PDVSA fuel terminal on the Caribbean island of Bonaire, then a blaze at a dock at the Paraguana complex that halted shipping for four days.

Also in 2010, a natural gas exploration rig, the Aban Pearl, sank in the Caribbean. All 95 workers were rescued safely.

?Writing short fiction is definitely my comfort zone.? Years ago I started out writing song lyrics, ad copy, and jokes.? These, like short fiction, are short, so when I?tried short fiction, I was?right at home.?

The following are my thoughts on?writing short fiction.? I?shall use Andrea Pearson's prompt questions as a guide.? ??

• What are the steps - to you - in writing good short fiction?

The main concept behind short fiction is make a long story short.? The fewer steps involved, the better.?? I usually think of my story's ending first.? Of course, a lot of novelists do this as well.? But unlike a novelist, I want to take the quickest route to that ending.? One way to do that is to make the ending the focus of?the story.? The beginning and middle are just the means to that ending.?

When you're writing the short story, pretend that your readers are extremely busy and extremely impatient.??They will only allow you?a few seconds to grab their interest.? Consider yourself?lucky if you can?keep their interest for more than five minutes.? In short, pretend you are writing an?advertisement. How many people like long ads?? None!? The?same is true for jokes and song lyrics.? Imagine a joke?that is 200 pages long before it reaches the punchline.? Not a pretty sight!?

So your steps might be 1) Quick hook or setup, 2) Skim through the middle (or cut it out if your ending won't suffer), 3)?Hit the reader with your cool ending, punchline or bottom line.? Always remember that?step 3 is the most important.? It is the reason the impatient reader is reading your short story.? ???

• What exactly is short fiction? (Length, etc.)

In track and field, there are sprinters and there are long-distance runners.? Short story writers are sprinters, and short fiction is the 100-meter dash (50-10,000 words).? The novelist, by contrast, is the long-distance runner, and the novel is the marathon (over 40,000 words).??

The same story can often be told?as a short story or in a novel.??Short fiction is?the disapline of communicating as much information with the fewest words possible.? ?By contrast, a novelist tries to stretch out the story without losing the reader's interest.??

• Do you feel this is an inborn talent for people, or something that can be achieved through practice and hard work?

I feel it's a combination of talent, practice and hard work.? I've heard writers complain that short fiction is difficult, but for me, holding a reader's interest for 200 to 1000 pages seems like a daunting task.?

Again, some of us are?natural sprinters and some are natural long-distance runners--but hard work and?determination can make any novelist a short-fiction writer.? ??

• Have you seen short fiction translate successfully to the big screen?

If memory serves, Rudyard Kipling's "The Man Who Would Be King" was a short story that made an excellent action-adventure film.? Interestingly enough, screenplays are about the same length as most short fiction, so I would imagine that any short story could easily be translated into a screenplay.?

• What is your favorite piece of short fiction? Why?

"The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe.? It has all the intensity, suspense and drama you will find in a thriller novel, but you can read it in one sitting--that leaves you time to play golf.?

• Who is your favorite short fiction author? Why?

O. Henry!? I love his twisted endings!?

• What makes good short fiction?

If it is not too long, it's good short fiction.?

• What is the most difficult part of writing in this genre?

Cutting all those scenes you are hopelessly in love with, but do nothing to move the plot forward.?

Russian court acquits Kasparov regarding rally

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian court unexpectedly acquitted opposition leader and chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov on Friday of participating in an unauthorized rally.

Kasparov, an anti-Vladimir Putin activist and former world chess champion, was detained Aug. 17, as he was attending a rally in support of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot outside the Moscow court where three of its members were being sentenced to two years in prison. He was violently rounded up by several riot policemen and thrown into a police van along with dozens of other protesters.

Kasparov also was later questioned after a police officer accused him of biting his hand during the detention.

But the Khamovniki court, where Pussy Riot members had been sentenced, cleared him of charges regarding the rally.

"This is a historic day ? the courts have stopped trusting the police," Kasparov said after leaving the court room, according to his website.

Russian courts are notorious for jailing and fining opposition leaders and Kremlin critics. The law was recently changed regarding public gatherings to dramatically raise the fine for taking part in an unauthorized one to 300,000 rubles (about $9,000).

Kasparov says he's now planning to file a complaint against his detention and a libel case against his accuser.

Kasparov, who is considered by some to have been the best player in chess history, retired from top-level professional play in 2005 to become a political activist. He is a vocal critic of Putin and the leader of the United Civil Front opposition group.

Nonprofit lender Acci?n Texas has been participating in the SBA's 504 loan program for only about 2?years, but has already become a big player in it.

Earlier this month, at the Mid-America Lenders Conference in Houston, the U.S. Small Business Administration's El Paso District office honored the local Acci?n Texas location for its participation in the 504 loan guarantee program.

For the second straight year, Acci?n was the top volume 504 lender in the district, which consists of El Paso County and nine other West Texas counties.

Acci?n issued 12 504 loans totaling $7.3 million in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2012.

These loans will create nearly 100 jobs in the next two years throughout the El Paso region, said Maria "Cruz" Montoya, a senior business development officer with Acci?n Texas.

"The SBA prides itself on economic development," Montoya said.

The 504 program is one of a handful of the SBA's loan guarantee programs.

Businesses can use 504 loans to purchase land, buy an existing building, construct a new building or buy equipment with a useful life of 10 or more years. The loans can also be used to do a temporary refinance of an existing commercial real estate loan.

The 504 SBA-guaranteed loans typically range from $50,000 to $5 million. Acci?n, however, doesn't start getting involved until the $250,000 level.

For amounts less than that, Acci?n has its microlender program, which targets businesses that don't

qualify for traditional financing and offers loans of $500 to $250,000.

For Acci?n, getting involved in the SBA's 504 loan program was the next logical step, said Elvira Valles, the organization's vice president for West Texas.

Its microlending program helps businesses get started or expand, establish credit and then graduate to traditional bank loans or SBA programs, such as the 504, Valles said.

"We are very excited about this," Valles said. "It allows our small-business owners an opportunity to purchase their own building at very low interest rates."

A key feature of the 504 program is a fixed interest rate for up to 20 years. Right now, that rate is 4.45 percent.

Business owners don't have to come up through Acci?n's microlending program to get a 504 loan, Montoya said. Any small business can apply.

Phillip C. Silva, director of the SBA's El Paso District office, said Acci?n's involvement in the 504 loan program has encouraged other 504 lenders to enter the market and make loans to businesses in the El Paso region.

"They've had a direct and indirect economic impact," Silva said.

At the same Mid-America Lenders Conference, the local SBA office also honored United Bank of El Paso del Norte and WestStar Bank for being the district's top volume lenders in its 7(a) loan guarantee program.
