A REBIRTH >>>
As you know by now Matt Driscoll, after almost nine years of writing for the Volcano, and four years acting as editor, has accepted a staff writer position at the Seattle Weekly, traveling via-Sounder to that city to the north and opening a new chapter in his life. Reports indicate he's enjoying his new position on the Seattle alt rag's Daily Weekly blog.
We miss you Matt. You made our rag better, and we can never thank you enough. Truly.
Matt's departure left a big hole at the Weekly Volcano World Headquarters. Ironically, in the true definition, it also presents an opportunity to bring the Volcano back to a true alternative newsweekly. The extra cash allows us to hire back the writers we let go when the economy tanked. I'll move into my old role as editor.
Today's issue marks the Volcano's rebirth. The Mudroom news section is back. Alec Clayton interviewed the Capital Playhouse board and employees regarding the return of founder Jeff Kingsbury. Chris Van Vechten examines the McCarver Elementary Special Housing Program and how it affects spring break. Paul Schrag scoured the city for former Occupy Tacoma campers to discover what they're doing now. And in the print version, we brought back the Pierce County Quality of Life Meter.
This week marks Adrienne Kuehl's first week as our new food and drink critic. She'll review restaurants - she gives her thoughts on Choripan by Asado today - as well as pen features and gives updates on our blog, Spew, such as her report on the frozen yogurt boom and her report from the Proctor Farmers Market. Kuehl also comes clean on local food and drink news in our Food Matters section.
All your favorite Volcano arts and entertainment coverage remains intact, and then some. You may have noticed the increase in arts and entertainment coverage on Spew. Alec Clayton's visual arts column posts every Tuesday. Nikki Talotta's Behind Bars bartending column is back on Fridays. Rev. Adam McKinney reviews movie trailers every Monday. Christian Carvajal will reports on all things nerdy every Monday so you may plan your week. I'm thrilled to report Elliott Trotter of The Melon fame will be joining Spew soon.
Besides her weekly Person, Place and Thing column and 3 Drink Minimum reports, Steph DeRosa will also uncover the soft side of metal, punk and hard rock musicians. Every week, she'll interview local musicians about their hobbies in her Metal Home Companion column. This week, guitarist Jonny Smokes discusses gardening and how to kill bugs. This column will be nothing short of awesome.
To be honest, Matt's departure coinciding with the Tournament of Breakfast and Tacoma Restaurant Week hype and the redesign of the rag has thrown me for a loop. I'm freakin' tired. I'll be tweaking the print and online versions over the next month. Please be patient.
One of my main goals is to foster an honest and legitimate dialogue with the people of Tacoma, Olympia, and everywhere in between where this beautiful rag can be found. Without the fine people of the South Sound we'd be nothing, after all. Please send me feedback at the appropriately titled feedback@weeklyvolcano.com. While I'm very proud of what Team Volcano has accomplished over the past month, I'm still trying to find my balance. I encourage feedback, via email or through comments on this blog and website.
Best,
