Short Sales vs. Foreclosures: the Children | Marshfield Real Estate

Posted: 27 Jul 2012, KCM Blog

This week, we have looked at the advantages of a short sale over a foreclosure from five different perspectives: Sellers?, Neighborhoods?, Banks?, Prices and the Children. ? The KCM Crew

We were recently troubled by the findings of a research paper authored by Julia Isaacs of the Brookings Institute for the organization First Focus which was titled The Ongoing Impact of Foreclosures on Children. In the report, Ms. Isaacs quantified the number of children that have been impacted: 2.3 million children have already lost their homes to foreclosure 3 million additional children are at risk of losing their home

She also noted the four ways foreclosures may affect children negatively: Families receiving foreclosure notices are much more likely to move than other families. Children who move frequently do less well in school. Homeowners receiving a foreclosure notice are under a lot of financial and psychological stress. Parents under financial distress sometimes engage in harsher and less supportive parenting.? This can lead to negative behaviors on the part of children, making it harder for them to interact well with peers and in school. Foreclosures have a negative impact on physical as well as mental health, with studies finding higher rates of non-elective visits to emergency rooms and hospitals in ZIP codes with the highest foreclosure rates. Children living in or near foreclosed homes may suffer the consequences of living in neighborhoods with more vacant houses, higher crime rates, lower social cohesion, and a lower tax base.

The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics just published a report on the impact of the housing crises on child abuse. Their conclusion:

?Multicenter hospital data show an increase in pediatric admissions for physical abuse and high-risk traumatic brain injuries (TBI) during a time of declining all-cause injury rate. Abuse and high-risk TBI admission rates increased in relationship to local mortgage delinquency and foreclosure trends.?

If you find that one of your clients is at risk of foreclosure, explain their options. The new National Mortgage Settlement might give them a pathway to stay in their home.

You can get information on the opportunities the settlement offers here.

However, if they have exhausted all their options and now must decide between a short sale and foreclosure, help them analyze what is the best decision for themselves and their families.

In most cases, a short sale will be the better option for them and their children as they will be able to have some control over the moving date and the move itself. This will create a level of dignity in the move that will alleviate some of the pressure on the parents and as a result lead to more effective parenting.

Using Auto Finance Calculator Before Applying for Loans

This article has been viewed 20 times.

Making an application for car finance plans can be difficult when you have bad credit score. You must look at your credit score before you start if you intend on buying a brand new car. Getting endorsement is easier if you have a clean record to present. Car loan companies generally look into your background record before allowing you right into a plan. Delayed payments and unpaid dues may damage your reputation.

You may look at having a vehicle as a requirement. Many households require it so that they can travel around with lesser expenses on transport. Maintaining a vehicle, however, could be equally as expensive. You may need to expend thousands of dollars for maintenance for merely a small scratch. Many people who currently have an automobile in their residences went under a car finance program. They could pay money for the automobile in monthly installment until theyve finished the entire repayment duration. Car finance businesses provide plans that go on for 2 years or even more.

You may only claim ownership of the car if the payment is complete. Lots of things may happen between the time period of the auto loan program. You may lose your employment or perhaps your only income source, or perhaps the economy may turn for the worse within your country. You might not have enough money to meet monthly deadlines. This will give you a bad credit score after sequential overlooked and overdue payments. It can be difficult to submit an application for new loans if you have an undesirable credit rating. All hope is not lost, however, since you can look for businesses supplying automobile loans for people who have bad credit.

Car finance with poor credit helps folks live through their financial meltdown. Lenders providing this kind of loan do not check into your record. To reestablish your financial standing, you need to start paying out on the dot. Work with an auto finance calculator before you apply for brand new loans. This helps you decide if you can afford to enter a loan program or not.

You may find an auto financing calculator on line. All that you should do is enter in the price of the vehicle you need and also the duration of monthly obligations. You may also need to include the taxes and interest rates in the formula. This web based device will calculate the amount of money youll have to pay each and every month under the program. Once you have a clear estimation of your potential monthly payments, you possibly can decide whether to proceed or not with the purchase.

Learning more about the terms of the plan may help you select which financial institution to pick. Find a little more about car finance with bad credit when you search for them on the net. Financing companies commonly jot down all of the benefits you can receive from their financing plans. Review the pros and cons of your financial loans and find which fits you the best. Only submit an application for businesses providing reliable services in the business of automobile financing. You could confirm a lenders trustworthiness when you conduct more research on the internet.

Airbus delays A350 after production glitch

PARIS (Reuters) - European planemaker Airbus delayed the introduction of its newest passenger jet, the carbon-composite A350, as parent EADS unveiled better-than-expected second-quarter earnings lifted by resilient demand for its existing range of jetliners.

The three-month delay follows a glitch in wing production and pushes first delivery of the all-new A350 -- Airbus' answer to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner -- into the second half of 2014, with a charge of 124 million euros ($152.52 million).

The A350 will now be delivered in the second half of 2014, EADS said in a statement with its second-quarter results on Friday that also included an improved EADS profit target for the year.

Presenting his first results since stepping up from the Airbus unit to become head of Europe's largest aerospace company in June, EADS Chief Executive Tom Enders said the new management would focus on executing projects and building a global profile.

India banks on Canada to skirt US gas export ban

NEW DELHI: India is trying to include Canada into the supply equation as it prepares to become an importer of energy from the US. But the plan may meet with only a limited success because of third-country pricing economics.

New Delhi has been lobbying Washington for a special dispensation to ship liquid gas from the US. Washington does not allow energy exports to countries that do not have a free trade agreement (FTA) with it.

Because of this ban, India's state-run gas utility is feeling hamstrung in its efforts to strike big deals for importing liquid gas from the US. The company in December signed a contract to import shale gas from Cheniere Energy's Sabine Pass facility and is close to clinching another such deal worth $12 billion.

While the political process to break the logjam over the US energy export ban to non-FTA countries continues, India is trying to work its way around the problem by roping in Canada that has a pipeline network with the US east coast.

India is hoping that it can route US gas ? and later, perhaps, shale oil ? through Canada. As an FTA partner of the US, Canada will be free of the constraints that currently keeps US energy a difficult draw for India.

But industry executives said the plan may have limited applicability which would depend on from where in the US the gas is coming. Government sources also admit that routing supplies through Canada could involve additional carrying cost, and that could push up the final price.

But politically at least, the Canadian option looks viable. India and Canada are wooing each other as strategic partners waiting for lift-off. Prime Minster Manmohan Singh met his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Mexico in June.

Foreign minister S M Krishna followed up that summit by meeting his counterpart John Baird in Toronto. Canada has been supportive of India's bid to join the four non-proliferation regimes at the recent NSG plenary in the US. Harper is expected to visit India in November on a state visit.

India and the US are expected to hold the next round of an annual energy dialogue in September, where New Delhi is expected to follow up on issues blocking energy imports.

Douglas County Prevails in Appeal of FEMA Flood Maps | South ...

After four years of contesting data used by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to develop flood maps for the Carson Valley, a ruling by a Scientific Resolution Panel found the FEMA requirements doesn't meet its own flood insurance program mapping standards.
Douglas County, which filed a lawsuit against FEMA in September 2009, was notified by the panel on July 18. The panel determined that FEMA?s data does not satisfy National Flood Insurance Program mapping standards defined in FEMA?s Guidelines and Specifications for Flood Hazard Mapping Partners and must be revisited, according to a news release by Douglas County.

Officials have scheduled a meeting with FEMA representatives in early August to discuss next steps, timing and funding for remapping the flood areas.

?This is an outstanding victory for our residents,? said County Manager Steve Mokrohisky in the news release. ?We anticipate the result will be new FEMA flood maps that utilize accurate data and ultimately reduce the cost of flood insurance for our residents.?

Douglas County appealed the base flood elevations and base flood depths proposed by FEMA for multiple flooding sources as shown on the preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map from April 2008. After consultation between FEMA and the County failed to resolve the appeal, Douglas County filed suit against FEMA in U.S. District Court alleging that FEMA?s data and analyses were scientifically or technically incorrect, according to the news release.

The county and FEMA entered into a settlement agreement in October 2011 calling for adjudication of the appeal by a scientific review. The appeal has been complex in that many aspects of the hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, as well as the accuracy of the mapping, were contested for multiple flooding sources. Douglas County and its residents, with support from various consultants, including Manhard Consulting Ltd, R.O. Anderson Engineering Inc., and Wood Rodgers Inc., identified 12 technical issues to be addressed by the SRP.

?Many people contributed to the successful outcome of this issue, but no single person worked as hard, as passionately or as long as our former County Engineer Mahmood Azad,? said Mokrohisky. ?Those of us that knew Mahmood understand the passion and vigor that he brought to his work and we are grateful for his efforts on behalf of our residents. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this sad time.?

County officials were notified that Mahmood Azad died suddenly this week. Mr. Azad was a storm water management expert and led Douglas County?s early efforts to challenge and ultimately appeal the FEMA flood maps.

BeachMint CMO departs, hires COO - Business Insider

Earlier this week, PandoDaily reported that BeachMint?s CMO, John Volturo, had left because, the blog argued, "something about BeachMint was no longer hot, sexy, or groundbreaking enough to keep Volturo?s attention."

PandoDaily also suggested Volturo was selling his shares to investment firm Millennium Technology Value Partners.

We got on the phone with BeachMint president Diego Berdakin. He says PandoDaily's story, while juicy and exciting, isn't completely accurate.

BeachMint is a network of fashion-focused e-commerce sites. The startup is two years old and based in Los Angeles; it has raised $75 million to date.

Berdakin was adamant: There is nothing wrong with BeachMint. Volturo departed to start his own company, not because he was disgruntled or lost faith in the startup. Berdakin says he gave the company adequate notice before his resignation.

"It?s normal that people turn over. When you have a city like Los Angeles that is really buzzing and there are lots of exciting things happening, people want to start their own journeys," says Berdakin.

Also, none of Volturo's shares have been sold since his departure. "Nothing has come through our desks. He'd have to inform the company; it's not like he can sell them and not tell us," Berdakin says.

The association PandoDaily mentioned between Volturo and Millennium probably stemmed from BeachMint's latest round of financing, says Berdakin. "Millennium was involved in our last round. Its involvement was all primary, which means it invested directly in the company.? It wasn't used to get John liquidity," he says.

Berdakin acknowledges the CMO role changed while Volturo was still at BeachMint.

?Before, marketing was all run at the BeachMint parent-company level. Now we have broken the company out into six parts because we have gotten a lot bigger," he says. "As the company grows, we needed to make every individual company more autonomous to really give it the best chance to be successful."

For that reason, the CMO position hasn't been filled. Volturo's former role no longer exists.

As for BeachMint, Berdakin says the startup is doing "phenomenally well." He says it has never had a down quarter in terms of both revenue and members, although he declined to share metrics.

"Everything continues to grow up and to the right. We had our biggest quarter last quarter; the quarter before that was our best?even better than Q4, which tends to be the best quarter for fashion and retail companies," says Berdakin.

BeachMint currently has 150 employees and Berdakin says Volturo is the only executive who has left. The founding BeachMint team is still in place.

In addition, BeachMint has made some impressive new hires, like COO Greg Steiner, a 12-year veteran of eHarmony. It also gained software developer Carl Trudel from Live Nation, Jason Reuben of Gemvara, and serial entrepreneur, Michael Broukhim.

Volturo couldn't be reached for comment, but yesterday he tweeted this:

Understanding the Importance of a Credit Report - NFCC Financial ...

By Gail Cunningham

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recently announced that it would soon begin examining credit reporting agencies to confirm, among other things, that they are producing accurate credit reports and that consumers have ample ability to dispute errors on their reports.

An accurate credit report is critical to a person?s financial future, and consumers need to be aware that the responsibility for reviewing their report lies with them. Even though consumers can obtain their credit report free of charge, the recent NFCC Financial Literacy Survey revealed that 62 percent of respondents had not ordered their report in the past 12 months.

It is important to understand what a credit report is and what it isn?t.? At its core, the purpose of a credit report is to provide those with a valid need a track record of a person?s credit history.? Having a way to evaluate the risk of extending new credit is just as important to the consumer as it is to the business.

Among other things, the report contains information such as where a person lives, how many lines of credit have been applied for or opened, and how he or she manages credit.? Credit reporting bureaus are a repository of information that has been provided to them.? They sell the information to lenders, insurers, employers, and other businesses that use it as a tool when evaluating a person?s application for credit, insurance or employment.

There is often misunderstanding regarding credit reports.? Many erroneously think that the credit report includes a credit score, a person?s race, income or medical history.? One of the most common misconceptions is that the credit bureaus are involved in the approval or denial of credit, which is not true.

The reasons for obtaining a credit report are many, but include confirming accuracy before applying for credit, checking for identity theft, or verifying that outdated information has rotated off.? Perhaps the most important reason is that the all-important credit scores are based on the information contained in the credit report.?

?If, upon review, consumers question the accuracy of the information contained in the report, the Fair Credit Reporting Act provides them with the opportunity to dispute the entry.? Consumers should dispute the information directly with the credit reporting bureau through which the report was obtained.? The bureau must then investigate the concern and correct or delete inaccurate or unverifiable information, usually within 30 days.?

Anxious to find a quick-fix for a blemished credit file, consumers often fall prey to unscrupulous businesses which charge high fees but offer no legitimate help beyond what consumers can do for themselves at little or no cost.? Warning signs are if a company offers to create a new identity and credit file, or guarantees to remove late payments or other negative information from a report.? The smart consumer will check with the Better Business Bureau before becoming involved with a credit repair firm.

Since the credit report is meant to be an accurate snapshot of a person?s credit history, consumers need to remember that if the report contains negative information that is true, it needs to remain a part of the report. Filing a frivolous dispute benefits no one.

Sir Richard Lindos Self-Improvement and Empowerment Success ...

Confidence is a powerful internal trait that an individual?possesses. Confidence can make a world of difference in your?life. It can be the difference between succeeding in life, or?failing.

Confidence is an important quality to have. It's a motivator?and booster. It is what most individuals strive to always?have and to maintain.

A lot of people in this world lack self-confidence; which may?explain why most are miserable, unsuccessful, and unmotivated.

If you have little to no self-confidence and low self-esteem,
don't worry, it's not all your fault. Most people are brain-
washed from early childhood to adulthood. They have been

OnStar seals partnership with RelayRides, makes renting your car even easier

Remember that partnership between OnStar and RelayRides we wrote about last March? Well it's finally coming to fruition today, with the peer-to-peer car sharing service launching support for remote door unlocking via OnStar's proprietary API. As a result, RelayRides members with OnStar-enabled vehicles no longer have to exchange keys in person if they so choose. Another benefit is that participants can list their automobile on RelayRides directly from their OnStar account -- renters then benefit from the added safety and security that comes with OnStar.

We had the chance to test an early version of the functionality on a Chevy Volt at SXSW a few months ago and it worked pretty much as advertised. There was a bit of a delay between the time we sent the unlock command from RelayRides' website on the demo iPad and the moment the doors actually unlocked on the car, but we're told this has been significantly improved since our hands-on. Of course, RelayRides also supports remote unlocking via text message. Take a look at the galleries below then hit the break for our hands-on video, RelayRides' video and OnStar's PR.

Nettie's Ramblings

Seven Points to Consider When Presenting Your ?Work

I want to discuss the presentation of your work.? If you are into the swing of writing it?s quite possible that you might seek publication one day.? So it?s best to get into good habits now.? You need to format your work so that it?s reader friendly, in other words, so it makes the reader want to read on.?

Here are some tips I?ve learned along the way as a writer:

1.? Don?t use too many long words.??

Sometimes we feel the need to impress others, but if the language used is too elaborate it only seeks to confuse people and slow down the reading process.? After all, do you really want readers to have to pull a dictionary down off the shelf to translate???

2.? Less is more.??

It?s easy to get carried away and repeat ourselves.? When we post to the group it?s more likely to be a first draft, but if seeking publication, it?s often a good idea to pare your work down beforehand.? Magazines, publishing houses and websites often have a specific word count and no matter how good your work is, they will reject it if it goes well over that count.

3.? Show lots of white space!??

This makes it easier on the eye for the reader.? Construct paragraphs.? Do you know when you need to use a new paragraph?? I always begin one when there is something new to say, or when a different person speaks.? I don?t indent paragraphs for online purposes, I just double line space.? I do the same thing when I submit to publishers.? These are known as ?block paragraphs?.? Just the way I?ve written this!

4.? Avoid the use of ALL CAPITALS!?

Most of us have used all caps at some time or another, but it can give the reader the wrong impression, especially online as it?s associated with shouting.? As well as that, if you decide you want to submit your work for publication it becomes hard work as you have to rewrite the entire piece of work as editors will not accept work written in capital letters.

5.? Use speech marks.

When writing a short story, personal essay or novel, if you need to indicate someone is speaking then you need to employ speech marks, either ?? ? or ? ?.? Various publishing houses use either.? I prefer ? ? for speech marks and ?? to emphasise a point.? For example:

?Hello Jenny,? he said. ?It?s been a long time...?

Jenny stood, motionless.? Ten years ago Matt Webster had seemed ?the next best thing to sliced bread?, now looking at him in his blue scrubs he looked like all the other staff in the Accident and Emergency department, overworked, tired and a little rough around the edges...

6.? Begin near the end...?

This might sound like strange advice but often people get so caught up in setting the scene that they forget to get straight into the action.? Immediate actions helps to hook the reader and makes them want to read on.

?For example:

Sam rose out of bed and padded softly down the stairs.? He switched on the kettle to make himself a cup of tea. It was going to be an exciting day, his stomach churned at the thought of it.? He popped a tea bag into the awaiting cup all the while mulling things over, should he leave it for another day?? Were all his plans in action?? Could something go wrong?

The sound of the phone ringing diverted his attention.? He lifted the receiver.? ?Hi Mum...?

His mother liked to phone him first thing in the morning.? She wanted to know what he was having for breakfast...??

Etc, etc, etc,

Sometimes writers luxuriate by composing several pages of inconsequential prose before getting right into the action.

How about instead:

?Stop what you?re doing...? Sam hissed at the counter clerk.? ?I have a gun in this rolled up newspaper pointing straight at you... and I?ll blow your fucking head off if you don?t do as you?re told...I want all those notes beside you bundled up and placed in this bag.?? He slid a black cloth bag across the counter.

The clerk?s eyes widened with terror, his face a deathly shade of grey.? Sam watched the man become putty in his hands.? This was going to be like taking sweets from a baby and he took great satisfaction in that.

See how more exciting it is to get immediately into the action? Sam had planned to hold up the post office.? Do we need to bother telling readers about him getting out of bed, making a cup of tea, taking a phone call from his mother, etc? Why bore readers with mundane facts and actions before getting right into the nitty gritty of the story?

7. ?Avoid text speak.

With modern technology we are used to abbreviations, especially when it comes to our mobile phones, but that kind of thing doesn?t translate well for the reader.? ?Wat U up to en?? Isn?t going to work in a short story, essay or novel, not unless one of the characters is reading a text message.? It?s hard work for a reader to decipher text speak and publishers will definitely not publish work like that.

Presentation is important it can mean the difference between publication and rejection and more importantly, whether we hook the reader in!

Why I am a chemist

The iconic double helix; both Watson and Crick needed to learn chemistry to decipher its structure (Image: Jerome Lejeune)

The twentieth century was supposedly the century of physics and the twenty-first century is that of biology. Where does chemistry fit in? The answer is, in both. Chemistry was integral to both the physics and biology that dominate their respective centuries. It has played a major role in human existence for as long as civilization has existed. And it continues to be a central part of much of scientific progress. The reason why chemistry does not seem to conspicuously make its way into the lexicon of cartographers of science is the same reason why the people who do the lights, costumes, event management, casting, musical score, special effects and cinematography for a major motion picture don?t figure on most people?s radar. That?s because their work is so ubiquitous and subtly pervasive that we take it for granted. And often enough chemistry surprises us by stepping into the shoes of the director, actors and writers.

Chemistry is a many splendored thing

I am a chemist. I am passionate about chemistry because of its central and tremendously diverse role in the entire scientific enterprise. Chemists can be doctors, inventing drugs and materials for medical implants. Chemists can be architects, designing materials that can confer resilience, strength and aesthetic shapes to building materials. Chemists can be physicists, calculating structures of molecules using quantum mechanics and shining lasers on them to interrogate their properties. Chemists can be astronomers, literally studying star stuff. Chemists can be climate and energy scientists, studying the impact of climate change on the carbon cycle and developing new materials for solar capture. Chemists can be biologists, probing the fundamental basis of life and its origins. Chemists can be chefs and perfumers, concocting uncanny approximations of natural fragrances and flavors for haute cuisine. Chemists can even be fashion designers, developing novel textiles and colors for the latest season. And chemists can be engineers in a very fundamental sense, building molecules atom by atom.

There are chemists and there are chemists

Molecular model of a metal-organic framework (MOF) designed to capture hydrogen, just one part of a virtually unbounded universe of materials chemists can make (Image: Science Buzz)

Images of chemists inevitably conjure up slightly bug-eyed scientists with unkempt hair holding green frothing liquids. But as with some other portrayals of scientists in popular sources, this image is simplistic at best and a caricature at worst. Reality is more diverse. How would the scene look like if you collected chemists from all specialties, put them together in a room and asked them to practice their trade? Many chemists would appear in front of fume hoods, specialized enclosures that are designed to suck out noxious fumes and allow a chemist to organize his or her wherewithal. You would indeed see some of them holding colorful, bubbling liquids ? and this visual aspect certainly contributes to the allure of chemistry ? but you would see many others holding tiny vials with colorless liquids or solids. The contents of those vials could range from DNA to snail toxins to new materials for solar energy. You could also see chemists experimenting with lasers, electronics, x-ray machines and spectrometers and they would still be doing chemistry. Tucked away in a corner, you would then improbably find a few chemists wearing neither lab coats nor tinkering with any kind of chemical apparatus. Instead ? and this happens to be my trade ? they would be intently staring at a computer screen, watching and manipulating 3D images of small molecules and proteins, writing code and running calculations on the structure and properties of these molecules. These people are still doing chemistry. Finally, there?s a small but significant group of chemists who you would not locate in this room; you would find them instead scattered thousands of miles away in rainforests, oceans and the arctic expanse. These chemists are digging deep into the soil, studying amphibians and scooping water in search of new drugs. Others would be testing water, soil and air samples for environmental pollutants.

Chemistry permeates our world

The foregoing discussion exemplifies the sheer diversity of chemical science and its practitioners. The heart of chemistry is the science and art of synthesis, a process that can make novel molecules which never existed before. The impact of this activity on human civilization is hard to overstate. Look around you. Every single bit of material entity that you see has either been synthesized in the flask of a chemist or is a natural compound that has been modified in the flask of a chemist. Even if it is not synthetic, it has probably undergone some kind of synthetic modification that has improved its color, flavor, smell, toughness, flexibility, softness, durability, conductivity, or aesthetic looks. Much of the modern world as we know it in the form of metals, plastics, fibers, drugs, detergents, pesticides, fuels, medical implants, food and drink is the direct result of chemistry. Pondering just one of chemistry?s myriad creations like jet fuel or PVC or aspirin should convince us of its all-pervasive role in human civilization. It would not be a stretch to say that chemistry?s influence on our modern way of life and the rise and fall of nations is equal to that of the development of the calculus.

The poppy plant; a single molecule - morphine - has contributed to its endless allure and geopolitical consequences (Image: Agrofuels)

Saying that chemistry has been influential in the rise and fall of nations is not an exaggeration. There is no other science whose basic entities have had such an impact on international and domestic geopolitics on an individual basis. Time and time again, single molecules have dictated the fate of nations. The central role of iron, bronze and aluminum in the shaping of ancient and modern cultures is well-documented but there?s more. For many years and even now, the economic strength of a country has been judged by its production of sulfuric acid. Or consider morphine, that singular substance which is alluring and forbidden in equal parts. Morphine was responsible for the Opium Wars, a set of conflicts whose repercussions forever changed the geopolitical landscape and future of China. And in a classic case of very slightly altered chemical identity which we will often explore on this blog, morphine?s cousin heroin continues to hold enormous sway on political calculations through the drug trade, leading to entire communities destroyed and billions of dollars spent. The pattern repeats throughout history; indigo, saltpeter, crude oil, rare earth metals, uranium, ambergris, gold, turmeric, silk, salt, all of them substances prized for the presence of one or a handful of molecules, sometimes prized enough to have encouraged trade, caused wars, brokered peace, killed millions, driven men to wealth, madness and despair.

The human science

The development of penicillin is the quintessential example of the intense positive impact chemistry has on our lives (Image: Kenneth Todar)

As I noted in a past post, it?s this intimate connection of chemistry with our world and history that makes it, more than any other discipline, the human science. This has led to a complicated relationship between molecules and our collective consciousness. It is not uncommon for the media to try to steer us clear of the dangers of ?chemicals?. What?s usually missing is the context. Sometimes the belief that all chemicals are bad leads to nonsensical advertising, such as the enthusiastic marketing of products that apparently contain no ?chemicals?, a practical impossibility if chemicals are defined as molecules of one kind or another. One of the common refrains of those battling this chemophobia is that ?the dose makes the poison?, a universal principle that applies to everything from water to botulism toxin. Many well-intentioned studies which seek to warn the public of the dangers of chemicals ignore this basic fact and often miss details of exact doses, statistical significance and sample sizes.

Nonetheless, much of this chemophobia reflects the complicated relationship between humans and science that we have always lived with. In this sense chemistry presents us with a microcosm of the tussle between technological progress and its moral dilemmas; after all, while penicillin brings a person back from the brink of death, nobody can deny that it was also used to kill during World War 1, and it is true that wrong doses of chemicals in the wrong hands can cause much death and suffering. Seen this way chemicals are no different from human beings where the specific context can turn a saint into a sinner. But these facts present us with a challenge that?s no different from that presented by the progression of science and technology since the industrial revolution. Remembering Joseph Rotblat?s words that much of human suffering is related to the time lag between technological developments and our moral and human capacity to fully comprehend them, for better or worse we will continue to be confronted with chemicals, with fossil fuels, with radioactivity and with genetic engineering. In many of these cases however, it is hard to deny that their sum total has greatly contributed to economic and technological progress and has objectively alleviated suffering, at least in some cases like drug development and poverty eradication.

Chemistry@TheCuriousWavefunction

On this blog I will be discussing the nature of chemical science. I will be talking about the history of chemistry and will try to illustrate the incalculable impact that molecules have had on our way of life. Papers will be discussed and the power of basic chemical concepts will be illustrated. Along the way we will meet some of the giants of chemistry on whose shoulders we all stand. Another goal is to discuss the unique philosophy of chemistry, something that has traditionally been neglected by philosophers of science. The overall aim is to point out the central place that chemistry has in our world and to demonstrate that it is very much the human science.

This blog picks up the baton from my old blog with the same name which I have been writing for slightly more than eight years now. That blog has been an immensely rewarding endeavor and has been enriched with comments and criticism by readers, many of whom have paid more attention to it than it deserved. Here I will also be dwelling on my other interest, the history and philosophy of science as well as miscellaneous scientific topics that I am interested in. I am thankful to the organizers of the Scientific American blog network (especially Bora Zivkovic) for this opportunity and am very happy to be joining a first-rate group of bloggers who between them seem to cover almost every field of human inquiry. I hope I can make my own modest contribution to the sparkling dialogue that defines this site, and I greatly welcome and appreciate comments and criticism.

Broadway Barks organized the 14th annual cat and dog adopt-a-thon in the Theater District Saturday, which got Bernadette Peters, Mary Tyler Moore and other Broadway celebrities to promote adoption and raise awareness for homeless animals.

"It's just so important for people when they want to get a pet to please, please rescue a pet, and you will have a bond with an animal that you just can't believe," said Peters.

"And if you get a dog young enough, in its puppyhood, it doesn't matter what you've heard about the particular breed," said Moore.

Peters said 27 shelters took part in the event.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is prodding Congress to "skip the unnecessary drama" and pass his proposal to extend Bush-era tax cuts to families earning less than $250,000 a year but not for those who earn more.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama denounces what he calls "needless delays" and "partisan posturing."

He has been pushing his proposal hard all week, but congressional Republicans are blocking it.

Obama says that will "hold the vast majority of Americans and our entire economy hostage."

In the Republican address, Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio says Obama's proposal would punish many small business owners who report business profits as personal income.

He says that raising taxes on job creators "makes about as much sense as cutting off the water supply during a drought."

HBT: It's atheism night at the ballpark

The St. Paul Saints have never been afraid to court controversy when it comes to promotions. They?ve definitely stepped it up a bit with this one, as they?ll be hosting ?A Night of Unbelievable Fun? and renaming themselves the St. Paul Aints on Aug. 10.

The night will be sponsored by the Minnesota Atheists, with the president of the American Atheists throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

?I think our message here and our brand of entertainment has always been one that?s been inclusive,? Saints GM Derek Sharrer told FOX Sports North. ?When we were approached by the Minnesota Atheists, we felt like it was within our nature to be inclusive and certainly work with them to provide them the opportunity to provide their message in the same way that we have worked with hundreds and hundreds of faith-based groups over our 20 years here in St. Paul.?

No word on what else the Aints have planned for the night, but I?ll be disappointed if some fans aren?t invited on to the diamond for infidel practice.

Biden tells NAACP Obama stands by his convictions

HOUSTON (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden rallied support for President Barack Obama before the nation's largest civil rights organization on Thursday, telling the NAACP that Obama has the "character of his convictions."

Biden drew cheers as he credited Obama for championing a landmark health care law, launching the mission that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and stepping in to rescue the financial system and U.S. automakers General Motors and Chrysler.

"He has put country first," Biden said.

Biden addressed the NAACP convention a day after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he'd do more for African-Americans than Obama, the nation's first black president. Romney was booed when he said he'd repeal Obama's sweeping health care reform law but otherwise got a polite reception as he reached out to a traditionally Democratic voting bloc.

The vice president never directly responded to Romney's argument that he could serve blacks better than Obama, choosing instead to dissect Romney's policy proposals. Biden said the former Massachusetts governor's agenda would hurt black working families, and he outlined detailed differences between Obama and Romney on health care, education, energy, women's rights and research.

"I believe this election will come down to character, conviction and vision. And it will not surprise you ? I don't think it's even a close call," Biden said. "So it's time, it's time for the NAACP to do what it's always done ... To stand up. Make our case. Stand our ground. And make real our vision for America."

Obama did not speak to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People this year, appearing instead in a taped video message. In the brief remarks, Obama said: "I stand on your shoulders and at the NAACP you have always believed in the American promise." He reiterated many of the themes of his re-election campaign, saying the nation needs to "build an economy where everyone can have the confidence that the hard work will also pay off."

The president said he was sorry he couldn't be there in person. Obama had no public events scheduled Thursday but was to be interviewed at the White House, along with first lady Michelle Obama, by Charlie Rose of CBS News.

White House officials noted that Obama spoke to the NAACP convention during the 2008 presidential campaign and in 2009, while Mrs. Obama spoke to the group in 2010. The president is scheduled to address the National Urban League in New Orleans on July 25.

Black voters are a key part of Obama's re-election strategy, with about 95 percent supporting him in 2008. Polls have shown black voters supporting Obama at comparable levels this year but Romney could undercut the president in states such as North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and Florida, all of which have large black communities, if he can persuade some black voters to support him or if they stay home on Election Day.

Romney said Wednesday that much more must be done to improve education in the nation's cities and noted that the 14.4 percent unemployment rate among blacks is higher than the 8.2 percent national average.

"If you understood who I truly am in my heart, and if it were possible to fully communicate what I believe is in the real, enduring best interest of African-American families, you would vote for me for president," Romney said.

In Obama's absence, Biden offered a fiery defense of administration policies while warning of what a Romney presidency would bring to civil rights. He asked attendees to "imagine" what the Justice Department would be like under a Romney administration and "imagine when his senior adviser on the Constitution is Robert Bork," the Republican Supreme Court nominee who was defeated by Democrats in 1987. Biden was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time.

Biden received sustained applause throughout his address. When he spoke about civil rights and administration efforts to expand voting rights and not diminish them, the crowd stood up and loudly cheered. When Biden said, "Did you think we'd be fighting these battles again?" people in the crowd answered in unison, "No."

Biden said there was a lot more he could say on protecting voting rights but that he was "preaching to the choir." ''Say it, say it," many in the crowded responded. As Biden was wrapping up, he said, "Let me close, my friends," prompting members of the audience to boo and yell, "No!"
