Broadway Barks organized the 14th annual cat and dog adopt-a-thon in the Theater District Saturday, which got Bernadette Peters, Mary Tyler Moore and other Broadway celebrities to promote adoption and raise awareness for homeless animals.

"It's just so important for people when they want to get a pet to please, please rescue a pet, and you will have a bond with an animal that you just can't believe," said Peters.

"And if you get a dog young enough, in its puppyhood, it doesn't matter what you've heard about the particular breed," said Moore.

Peters said 27 shelters took part in the event.
