Google Instant Search and SEO

There?s been a lot of chatter lately about Google?s new instant search function and what it means to SEO. Some have already begun the somber SEO funeral procession, with casket and a trio of horn players and all. They are, perhaps, jumping the gun. Google Instant Search is absolutely not poised to kill SEO, however we all must expect a certain amount of transformation.

First of all. What is Google Instant Search? It?s a new functionality Google unveiled a couple of weeks ago that reinvents how the engine processes and shows search results. It begins searching as you type and starts showing you results well before you are done. It analyzes possible outcomes for what you are typing, as well as previous searching habits, to create a reasonable approximation of what you?ll be searching for. To some it seems psychic. There is no magic here, folks. It?s just the usual smart algorithms in place. They are just unleashed a bit sooner than usual.

Just because your searches are yielding faster refinement times doesn?t automatically change the nuances of SEO. However, it may create some quirks in the stream. First of all, users are going to start receiving feedback immediately, right from their first letter. Human nature dictates that if they are given information, they tend to refine their search accordingly. This also means that no two people could receive the same links for essentially the same information. It?s these two points that have naysayers in an uproar. They claim the days of the homogenized Internet is over. SEO is dead because everyone?s net experience is heretofore going to be absolutely different. After all, even Google is saying to expect fluctuations around organic and heavily used keywords.

But hey. All is not lost. There is certainly some smoke with accompanying mirrors going on here.

SEO contributor Stephan Spencer has this to say about the new feature in regard to SEO, ?Google Instant isn?t anything to get stressed about. In regards to SEO, Google Instant is not a ?game changer? or a ?disruptive technology.? I?d argue it?s not even a major SEO development. It?s nowhere near the impact of Bing powering Yahoo?s results, for instance.

Basically, it?s business as usual. The algorithm hasn?t changed, so how users are driven to your site also hasn?t changed. The whole thing just flies by at a different speed now, thus giving the illusion of change. Webmasters need to keep doing what they do best, focusing on content, traffic, and conversions. If anything, consider it a call to arms for SEO practitioners to up their game, to amp their speed in the same way Google has.

?Google Instant demands that practitioners become more aware of what Google Suggest is recommending to searchers, how to influence Google Suggest?s recommendations, and how to win at the more competitive terms that are being predicted by Google.? Spencer adds.

One thing, though, that webmasters must account for is the new-found important of CTR. CTR ?is the new ranking. The click-through rate for organic listings becomes more important than pure rankings since users will see many more search results in each?session.

Also, Google Instant does modify how eyeballs move around the screen. The traditional Golden Triangle theory regarding those eye movements on search result pages is no longer true. You used to perform a search, sit back and study the results and the ads before either clicking on a listing, or modifying your query. This will now be substantially different as eyes will wander up and down between the query field, listings, Universal Search entries, and AdWords ads. Not sure how exactly this will modify SEO but it is definitely something to keep an eye on.

So as you can see, SEO is most definitely not dead. If anything it?s more interesting than ever before. It may just be entering a new golden age. The prize is there, if you are willing to take it.

Many Asian friends are wishing each other a happy Mid-Autumn Festival today at EarthSky?s Facebook page. For us in the U.S. and elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere, tonight?s Harvest Moon is a sign that autumn is here. Meanwhile, in China, Taiwan, Vietnam and other parts of Asia, the focus is on the annual Mid-Autumn Festival, which by tradition also carries a strong connection to tonight?s moon. It?s sometimes called the Moon Festival in honor of this moon. It?s also called the Mooncake Festival for a traditional baked delicacy exchanged among family and friends. In 2012, the Mid-Autumn Festival takes place on September 30 for Asia and September 29 for those in the United States.

Everything you need to know: Harvest Moon 2012

The date of the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar. One website called the eighth month the Chicken month. That timing places the festival in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar, close to the autumnal equinox, every year.

This year?s autumnal equinox fell on September 22. The Chinese lunar month begins on the day of a new moon. Since the first day of eighth lunar month was September 16, 2012, the Moon Festival falls on September 30 in Asia. But it falls on September 29 in the U.S. since ? in U.S. time zones ? the date of new moon fell on September 15 for us within U.S. shores.

The Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival features the beautiful idea that we all see the same moon phase on or around the same date. There are some small differences due to time zone, but, for the most part, the moon looks the same to all of us as night falls across the globe. The website Chinese-Fortune-Calendar.com said:

The Moon Festival is a holiday in China. It?s an occasion for family reunion. Chinese families like to get together to eat the mooncakes and watch the moon at the Moon Festival night. For the people are out of town or for Chinese are from China stay in USA, they miss their family or the lover at home and share the same moon at the night of the Moon Festival before the Internet gets popular.

Another tradition at the Mid-Autumn Festival is lanterns, both in the sky and on the ground. After a family dinner, Asian children are said to carry lanterns and stroll in parks or gardens. As part of the festival, lanterns are also released into the sky.

And, traditionally, matchmaking has been part of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Some parts of China are said to feature dances held to help young men and women find partners, although I don?t know how widely this tradition is practiced in today?s world. According to Wikipedia:

Young women are encouraged to throw their handkerchiefs to the crowd. The young man who catches and returns the handkerchief has a chance of romance.

Facebook recently announced a sizable new investment in California real estate. What is it, is it a good move and what other opportunities are evolving for real estate investors?

Facebook?s New Real Estate Bet

Zuckerberg recently proclaimed he was ready to make some ?big bets?. One of them appears to be a major expansion of the social networks offices in Menlo Park, CA. The massive complex is being designed by the legendary Frank Gehry and boasts an expansive hanger like 10 acre open working area heralded as the ?largest open floor plan in the world?.

So beyond the cool design, is this really a smart move given the current stock situation and will the show end up killing productivity at the tech giant causing it to lose even more of its edge?

It is certainly a fantastic time to buy California real estate, especially with interest rates so low however many question whether this is the only smart thing about the plans. You?d think Facebook was still the last brand who needed to stoop to Hollywood antics in order to stay in the news. Building the tallest condo or office building or even selling the most expensive one is one thing but there are real business operations to be kept in mind here.

Many are concerned that the vastnesses of the open space could easily kill productivity and creativity and ultimately the stock, especially after plowing so much money into the new building and taking on more overhead. Yes, having mini kitchens throughout, treadmill desks, a roof top walking trail and encouraging more interaction between staff sounds good but it is going to take some amazing design skill to be able to keep real working going on. Before you think about opening a real estate office like this think about the noise, lack of focus, germs, privacy and stress. Tech firms like Facebook can?t afford high turnover or to slip for even a month.

Facebook?s Opportunities for Real Estate Professionals

Mobile aside and not mentioning the fact that Apple left out further integration on the new iPhone 5, Facebook also seems like it may be losing serious ground to Google as Google+ racks up 400 million plus serious business users and Facebook slashes user numbers due to fake accounts.

Zuckerberg did allude to the social network pursuing search marketing as a channel which could be interesting but will face serious competition. However, many will be surprised if the Zuck is still at the head of the table next year. Right now he?s a sitting duck, a scapegoat whose firing can save Facebook from bankruptcy when current plans don?t go right, but if there is one thing the he is slick about it is control.

While this is a great time for buying California real estate you have to imagine flipping real estate like this has to be a little more challenging given the numbers and niche.

Maybe the original house is a hotter flipping item? What other soon to be billionaire entrepreneurs? inspiring first digs are up for grabs and can be flipped for great profit with a good story?

After a week filled with complaints about the new Maps app found in iOS 6, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, the?company's CEO, Tim Cook, has issued an apology to customers along with a list of alternative apps.

A link to the apology appears on the?Apple website, plainly labeled as "[a] letter to our customers regarding Maps."

Cook begins the note by explaining that while Apple strives to "make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible," it "fell short on this commitment" with the launch of its new Maps app.

"We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better," Cook writes?before explaining that the reason a new version of Maps needed to be created was so that Apple could offer its customer features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, and so on. "The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you," he adds.

While Apple's improving its own Maps app, you can use something else, Cook suggests. "You can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app."

One can only imagine how much it pains Cook to suggest that the over 100 million folks who are using iOS 6 at this time should just try a product made by Apple's competitors for a while.

Madrid and Catalonia clash over independence referendum

MADRID (Reuters) - The parliament of Spain's powerful but heavily indebted region of Catalonia voted in favor of holding a referendum on independence on Thursday, in defiance of Madrid which said it would stop any such move towards secession.

The vote in Catalonia, responsible for a fifth of the country's economic output, was backed by 84 parliament members including those of ruling party CiU, while 25 abstained, and 21 voted against holding a referendum.

The vote was held minutes after Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria told reporters the national government was prepared to prevent any referendum.

Catalonia brought forward regional elections to November 25 after regional leader Artur Mas' proposal to create a separate Catalan tax agency was flatly rejected by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who said it went against Spain's Constitution. Mas then said he would seek a referendum on an independent Catalonia.

Mas's conservative CiU party would likely win an absolute majority in elections, polls show, strengthening the push towards independence and delivering a blow to Rajoy who has called for national unity to counter the country's economic crisis.

Independence fervour has been growing in Catalonia during the deep recession.More than half of Catalans say they want a separate state.

Catalonia's regional government says it pays 16 billion euros more to the Spanish state than it receives in transfers.

Accused Colorado gunman made threats to psychiatrist

DENVER (Reuters) - Accused Colorado gunman James Holmes made threats to a university psychiatrist before a July shooting rampage at a suburban Denver screening of a Batman movie that killed 12 people, according to court documents released on Friday.

The University of Colorado psychiatrist reported those unspecified threats to campus police before the shooting at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," a court document filed a week after the shooting and unsealed on Friday showed.

Holmes, a former neuroscience graduate student, has been charged with murder and attempted murder over the rampage, one of the worst outbursts of U.S. gun violence in recent years. In addition to those who died, 58 people were wounded.

University psychiatrist Lynne Fenton, who has testified that she treated Holmes, 24, more than a month before the July 20 shooting, has said her professional relationship with Holmes ended in mid-June.

"The relationship was terminated after the defendant made threats towards who reported the matter to the University of Colorado (CU) police department," the newly unsealed documents said.

"As a result of these actions, university administration terminated the defendant's access privileges to all or part of the Anschutz campus," the documents said.

The documents said the threats were made to a university psychiatrist, but they were heavily redacted, and Fenton's name does not appear in the document.

Prosecutors have depicted Holmes as a young man whose once promising academic career was in tatters as he failed graduate school oral board exams in June and one of his professors suggested he may not have been a good fit for his competitive Ph.D. program.

They have said that Holmes lost his access to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus after making unspecified threats to a professor on June 12, after which he began a voluntary withdrawal from his program.

ARSENAL OF GUNS

Other court documents among the 57 unsealed on Friday give more insight into a notebook that Holmes mailed to Fenton the day before the massacre.

Prosecutors expressed frustration with a published report saying the notebook was "full of details about how he was going to kill people," and included "drawings and illustrations of the massacre," according to one document.

That information, given to Fox News from an unidentified law enforcement source, violated Holmes' doctor-patient privilege, prosecutors argued in the July 25 document.

Prosecutors said Holmes began "a detailed and complex plan" to commit murder and obtain an arsenal of guns and protective armor after he was denied access to campus facilities.

Holmes' attorney Daniel King, who analysts have said appears to be laying the groundwork for a possible insanity defense, has said his client suffers from an unspecified mental illness and had tried to get help before the shooting.

Previous media reports have said Fenton reported her concerns about Holmes to a campus threat assessment team and a campus police officer.

Ready for your close-up?

As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words." For people in certain professions ? acting, modeling, and even politics ? this phrase rings particularly true. Previous studies have examined how our social judgments of pictures of people are influenced by factors such as whether the person is smiling or frowning, but until now one factor has never been investigated: the distance between the photographer and the subject. According to a new study by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), this turns out to make a difference ? close-up photo subjects, the study found, are judged to look less trustworthy, less competent, and less attractive.

The new finding is described in this week's issue of the open-access journal PLoS One.

Pietro Perona, the Allen E. Puckett Professor of Electrical Engineering at Caltech, came up with the initial idea for the study. Perona, an art history enthusiast, suspected that Renaissance portrait paintings often featured subtle geometric warping of faces to make the viewer feel closer or more distant to a subject. Perona wondered if the same sort of warping might affect photographic portraits ? with a similar effect on their viewers ? so he collaborated with Ralph Adolphs, Bren Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and professor of biology, and CNS graduate student Ronnie Bryan (PhD '12) to gather opinions on 36 photographs representing two different images of 18 individuals. One of each pair of images was taken at close range and the second at a distance of about seven feet.

"It turns out that faces photographed quite close-up are geometrically warped, compared to photos taken at a larger distance," explains Bryan. "Of course, the close picture would also normally be larger, higher resolution and have different lighting ? but we controlled for all of that in our study. What you're left with is a warping effect that is so subtle that nobody in our study actually noticed it. Nonetheless, it's a perceptual clue that influenced their judgments."

That subtle distance warping, however, had a big effect: close-up photos made people look less trustworthy, according to study participants. The close-up photo subjects were also judged to look less attractive and competent.

"This was a surprising, and surprisingly reliable, effect," says Adolphs. "We went through a bunch of experiments, some testing people in the lab, and some even over the Internet; we asked participants to rate trustworthiness of faces, and in some experiments we asked them to invest real money in unfamiliar people whose faces they saw as a direct measure of how much they trusted them."

Across all of the studies, the researchers saw the same effect, Adolphs says: in photos taken from a distance of around two feet, a person looked untrustworthy, compared to photos taken seven feet away. These two distances were chosen by the researchers because one is within, and the other outside of, personal space ? which on average is about three to four feet from the body.

In some of the studies, the researchers digitally warped images of faces taken at a distance to artificially manipulate how trustworthy they would appear. "Once you know the relation between the distance warp and the trustworthiness judgment, you could manipulate photos of faces and change the perceived trustworthiness,'' notes Perona.

He says that the group is now planning to build on these findings, using machine-vision techniques ? technologies that can automatically analyze data in images. For example, one application would be for a computer program to have the ability to evaluate any face image in a magazine or on the Internet and to estimate the distance at which the photo was taken.

"The work might also allow us to estimate the perceived trustworthiness of a particular face image," says Perona. "You could imagine that many people would be interested in such applications ? particularly in the political arena."

Doctors, researchers and allied health professionals from some 60 countries around the world arrived at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre today for the opening of the region's largest bone-related congress. The IOF Regionals 2nd Middle East and Africa Osteoporosis Meeting and the 6th Pan Arab Osteoporosis Congress PAOC'6 will continue until October 1, 2012.

The Meeting is being held by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) in partnership with the Pan Arab Osteoporosis Society (PAOS), the Jordanian Osteoporosis Prevention Society (JOPS), the Jordanian Physicians Osteoporosis Society (JPOS) and the Palestinian Osteoporosis Prevention Society (POPS).

Speakers at the Opening Ceremony included the Jordanian Minister of Health Dr. Abdul Latif Wreikat, attending on her behalf of her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, as well as Dr. Hani Abdeen, Palestinian Health Minister and Dr. Asaad Ramlawi, Secretary General of Health & Healthcare in Palestine.

"We are delighted to welcome such a large and diverse audience of health professionals from the Middle East and other regions around the world," said IOF President and Meeting Co-Chair John A. Kanis. "Osteoporosis and related fractures, as well as musculoskeletal diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and sarcopenia, are a major cause of disability and mortality in the Middle East, as elsewhere in the world. It is therefore critically important that health professionals learn about the latest advances in the prevention and management of these diseases."

International and regional experts will share the latest clinical knowledge and new research on prevention strategies, diagnostic methods, and treatment options for osteoporosis and related diseases. The Meeting programme will include 17 plenary lectures, 12 Meet-the-Expert sessions, two Roundtables on orthopaedics and markers of bone turnover, four Satellite Symposia, as well as numerous oral and poster presentations.

Doctors, researchers and allied health professionals from some 60 countries around the world arrived at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre today for the opening of the region's largest bone-related congress. The IOF Regionals 2nd Middle East and Africa Osteoporosis Meeting and the 6th Pan Arab Osteoporosis Congress PAOC'6 will continue until October 1, 2012.

The Meeting is being held by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) in partnership with the Pan Arab Osteoporosis Society (PAOS), the Jordanian Osteoporosis Prevention Society (JOPS), the Jordanian Physicians Osteoporosis Society (JPOS) and the Palestinian Osteoporosis Prevention Society (POPS).

Speakers at the Opening Ceremony included the Jordanian Minister of Health Dr. Abdul Latif Wreikat, attending on her behalf of her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, as well as Dr. Hani Abdeen, Palestinian Health Minister and Dr. Asaad Ramlawi, Secretary General of Health & Healthcare in Palestine.

"We are delighted to welcome such a large and diverse audience of health professionals from the Middle East and other regions around the world," said IOF President and Meeting Co-Chair John A. Kanis. "Osteoporosis and related fractures, as well as musculoskeletal diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and sarcopenia, are a major cause of disability and mortality in the Middle East, as elsewhere in the world. It is therefore critically important that health professionals learn about the latest advances in the prevention and management of these diseases."

International and regional experts will share the latest clinical knowledge and new research on prevention strategies, diagnostic methods, and treatment options for osteoporosis and related diseases. The Meeting programme will include 17 plenary lectures, 12 Meet-the-Expert sessions, two Roundtables on orthopaedics and markers of bone turnover, four Satellite Symposia, as well as numerous oral and poster presentations.

Dr. Basel Masri, Co-Chair of the Meeting, stated, "We are especially pleased that this event is now CME accredited by both the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the Jordanian Medical Council. Economic trend lines, for now, favoring Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For the past year, as the presidential election unfolded, President Barack Obama confronted a dizzying swell of economic news ? hiring up, hiring down, a euro crisis abroad, seesawing gasoline prices at the pump, foreclosures dragging down home values.

Six weeks before the election, those highs and lows are merging into a straighter line which, while below optimum performance, is moving in a positive direction for the country and for the president in his contest with Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Consumer confidence is at its highest level since February. Home values are up and, more important in the election season, housing prices in 20 major cities, many of them in battleground states, rose in July. Despite recent declines, the stock market has been on an upswing, adding value to Americans' 401(k) retirement plans.

Improving consumer confidence is certainly a positive sign for Obama, who has faced a slow economic recovery and a stubbornly high unemployment rate that has remained above 8 percent since virtually the start of his presidency. The consumer confidence index, as measured by The Conference Board, jumped from 61.3 for August to 70.3 for September, though it remains well below 90, the level that is thought to signify a healthy economy.

The numbers track with recent public opinion polls showing that while a majority of Americans say the country is heading in the wrong direction, an increasing number say the country is on the right path. The rising optimism also coincides with polls showing Obama opening leads in some crucial swing states, including all-important Ohio.

If Obama's advantage holds through Election Day, September may be remembered as a pivotal month when political and economic attitudes began to gel.

A weak recovery still makes the economy vulnerable, and public opinion can still change during the critical month of October. Three debates next month between Obama and Romney have the potential of shaking up the race. And the stock market showed its fickleness Tuesday with its worst sell-off since June after a Federal Reserve official cast doubt on the effectiveness of the central bank's recent economy-boosting measures.

But with early voting already under way in some states and with a shrinking number of persuadable voters, Obama aides see a favorable political landscape despite Romney's focus on sluggish growth.

Obama advisers have long argued that despite the economy's weak performance, Obama's re-election hopes rested on a positive trend line. Indeed, Obama has been running an ad since the Democratic convention earlier this month that points to private sector job growth even as it acknowledges "we're not there yet."

"The economy is perceived in relative rather than absolute terms," said St. Louis University political scientist and pollster Ken Warren.

Romney aides argue that their bottom-line argument ? that the country cannot afford another four years of Obama ? remains a winning message that can still resonate with undecided voters.

While the confidence accrues to the president's benefit, consumer attitudes are more a reflection of their economic perceptions than they are of presidential approval. What's more, studies of the relationship between politics and consumer confidence show that falling confidence hurts a president's approval rating more than rising confidence helps.

If the president can benefit, pollsters say Democrats and Republicans seeking re-election in tough contests might also profit from improving economic indicators.

"It would help all incumbents because people are less angry," Warren said.

The rise in confidence comes as the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index showed that national home prices rose 1.2 percent in July compared with a year ago, increasing home equity and, by extension, the perception of personal wealth.

"People pick up on that very quickly," said Rob Shapiro, an economist and former adviser to President Bill Clinton. "They're no longer getting poor every month. So people think, 'OK, we are on a better path, even if we're proceeding on it a lot more slowly than I expected or hoped.'"

Significantly, prices are rising in many large cities in swing states such as Florida, Colorado, Michigan and North Carolina. Prices have risen 3.6 percent in Tampa, Fla., in the past year, for example. And they're up 5.4 percent in Denver, 6.2 percent in Detroit and 2.2 percent in Charlotte, N.C.

Still, Obama is bucking trends. Unemployment stands at 8.1 percent, and no president has been re-elected with unemployment above 8 percent since the Great Depression. Despite improving public attitudes, an Associated Press-GfK poll this month found 52 percent of likely voters said the country was moving in the wrong direction.

"Going from absolutely horrible to really, really bad is not exactly an endorsement of an incumbent president's record," Republican pollster Whit Ayres said. "We're a long way from measures that show the American people have confidence in the direction of the economy."

Shapiro concedes that the politics are confounding. A Washington Post poll out Tuesday showed Obama leading Romney among likely voters in Ohio, 52 to 44 percent. The president also had a slight edge in Florida, 51 to 47 percent among those most likely to vote.

"We have a president who is leading in a very convincing way despite economic numbers that suggest that he should either be losing or just hanging on, and he's not just hanging on," Shapiro said.

Brightest Star Explosion in History Reveals Lonely Supernova

The brightest exploding star ever seen with the naked eye in recorded history apparently experienced a quick and lonely death, a new study reveals.

The discovery, which centered on a star explosion witnessed in the year 1006, suggests that many similar outbursts leave no companion star to accompany their demise.

The most powerful exploding stars in the universeare supernovas, which are bright enough to momentarily outshine their entire galaxies. One type of star explosion, known as a ?Type 1a supernova, occurs when one star pours enough fuel onto a dying companion star known as a white dwarf ?to trigger an extraordinary nuclear explosion.

The new study centered its sights on the supernova SN 1006, which was seen all over Earth in the spring of 1006 above the southern horizon of the night sky, in the constellation Lupus, just south of Scorpio. At its peak, researchers say the supernova, which exploded about 7,100 light-years away, was about one-quarter the brightness of the moon, luminous enough that people could have read by its light at midnight. Explosive deaths of stars

Our sun and more than 90 percent of all stars in our galaxy will one day end up as white dwarfs, which are made up of their dim, fading cores.

There are two ways Type 1a supernovas?are born ? the slow way, which involves a living star dumping gas onto a white dwarf, and the fast way, where two white dwarves merge catastrophically. The slow route would leave the white dwarf's companion behind, while the fast one would effectively blast away discernible traces of either white dwarf.

Whether slow origins of Type 1a supernovas were more commonplace than fast ones or vice versa remained a puzzle. Knowing more about the causes behind these explosions is essential because Type 1a supernovas are key to gauging the rate at which the universe is expanding, which in turn could shed light on why this expansion is apparently accelerating due to a mysterious force called dark energy.

Scientists have tried looking for companion stars of Type 1a supernovas before. One possible instance was Tycho's supernova, SN 1572, one of the few supernovas visible to the naked eye in historical records, although that case remains questioned.

Now a fruitless search for a companion star to the brightest supernova ever seen with the naked eye on Earth suggests this explosion took the fast route.

Using data from the Paranal Observatory in Chile, the researchers combed through the space 16.5 light-years in diameter around SN 1006 and "do not find any star in the surroundings of the supernova remnant to be the possible companion of the progenitor of SN 1006," lead study author Jonay Gonz?lez Hern?ndez, an astrophysicist at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands in Spain, told SPACE.com.

When combined with previous results, these findings suggest less than 20 percent of Type 1a supernovas apparently occur via the slow route.

The scientists detailed their findings in the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Nature.

Why MH3 Ultimate 3DS lacks online, Wii U ... - Gaming Everything

The 3DS version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate won?t have online play. To make up for that, the development team implemented save transfer functionality with the Wii U game. Three 3DS players and a Wii U player will be able to experience the title together through local Wi-Fi.

Monster Hunter chief Ryozo Tsujimoto told Eurogamer:

?We wanted people to play together. We know there are some people who want to play online. Unfortunately with the 3DS version you can?t do that. But we have made this feature so you can play together. You can have your friends bring their save data to your house and have a Monster Hunter party. One person will play on the big screen and three other people will play with their 3DS versions. People can continue their save data from what they had before and go back home and update their data on their Wii U.?

As for why the 3DS version doesn?t have online play, Tsujimoto explained:

?To put it frankly, when we were developing the game we were looking into it but there were some places we were unsure about. We didn?t have the correct techniques to get it to work. We decided we probably shouldn?t release something that didn?t work well. We didn?t want to lower the quality of the game.?

Tsujimoto was able to share a few details as to how Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate?s online will work on Wii U. It will support text chat, possibly video chat, a friends list, and a search function to find other hunters.

?With internet play you can play with other hunters online. In terms of new features, we have text chat in the game. Right now we?re looking into voice chat and seeing how we can get that to work, but it hasn?t been 100 per cent confirmed. In the game we have a friends list. So if you have your friends you know personally, you can add them to that list. That makes it very easy to jump to wherever they?re playing. If you want to find other players there is a search function you can use. Once you get four hunters connected together you?ll automatically go off on a quest. We?re trying to make an online experience that?s extremely stress-free and easy to use for the players.?

Capcom hopes that Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will lead to a rise in popularity of the series overseas. In addition to making the 3DS and Wii U versions available together on the same day, Ultimate?s localization time is the shortest for any title in the series thus far.

In the end though, Capcom won?t be changing Monster Hunter in any big ways just to make the IP more appealing to western games. The team wants to maintain the essence of the series, but is willing to make a few small modifications/additions, such as the new Target camera.

?We know there are a lot of people overseas who have made their own Monster Hunter communities. We know there are a lot of people who are huge fans of the series overseas. We want to make products to continue to build that fan base. We know it?s a fantastic game and an interesting game for overseas users. So we think if we continue working on the game, it?ll eventually start to break out. We don?t want to segregate the two groups, like Japan and overseas. We view them as one group. The most important thing for us is we keep the essence of Monster at its core. We want to make sure everyone knows this is what Monster Hunter is all about. We do get opinions and feedback from people from all over the world, not only in Japan, but also America and Europe and other countries. We take that all into account when we?re developing our games. That?s one of the reasons why we have this new feature called the Target Camera. We got a lot of feedback from fans, and they said one of the most difficult things about playing Monster Hunter is controlling the camera. So we added the Target Cam to the game so with the press of a button you can focus on one of the monsters you?re fighting against. You don?t have to spend all this time pressing the d-pad just to focus on a monster. You can just do a simple button press and you?re done. Those are the kinds of changes we want to make. They might be little changes, but they can turn out to be very significant as well.?

Finally, Tsujimoto addressed the reasoning to make Monster Hunter 4 for the 3DS:

?When we were developing Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the 3DS, it was an experiment. It was new hardware for us. We didn?t know the capabilities of the hardware. But as a portable system it was very unique to work with. It has two screens and 3D capabilities. To us as developers, we want to challenge ourselves to make something that is very good on that system. So after we made Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on 3DS, we were able to analyse what we did on that game. We realised it was quite easy to develop for. That was the reason why we continued with Monster Hunter 4 on 3DS.?

Australia?s Mick Fanning and America?s Kelly Slater continued their excellent run of form at Lower Trestles in California, America, on Thursday, September 20, emerging triumphant in their respective quarter-finals at the 2012 Hurley Pro, sixth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, to secure their place in the semi-finals.

Fanning made his way into the next stage of the competition by defeating his fellow countryperson Taj Burrow in the first quarter-final.

Australia?s Adrian Buchan failed to keep Slater from walking away with the win in the second quarter-final, thus getting eliminated from the competition while conceding the semi-final slot to his rival.

There was plenty of reason for the elite ASP surfers to exert themselves even more upon reaching the quarter-finals since the challenge was only going to be tougher because of a greater determination to go all the way after reaching this far and surviving so many heats.

Fanning, former two-time ASP World Champion, found himself taking on Burrow, another Australian powerhouse, in the first quarter-final. There was very little to choose between the two surfers since they were equally formidable.

As the heat kicked-off, Fanning got down to business right away, locking a juicy wave that appeared to unleash a series of exquisite tricks, thus earning an 8.40 off his first business-wave. He soon followed it up with a spectacular 9.20-point ride, thus reaching a heat-total of 17.60 points.

Burrow took his time to move on, but eventually stepped up halfway through the heat to register a 7.70 on the score-board off his first business-wave and later added an additional 8.80 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 16.50 points. The effort was nothing short of impressive, but it just was not enough to take him past his rival on the score-board.

The second Quarter-final featured a superb performance by Slater as he shared the sea with Buchan in a battle for the semi-final slot.

The reigning 11-time ASP World Champion got off to a modest start, but eventually picked up to unload a series of exciting tricks on his first business-wave, earning an 8.27 for the effort. Keeping the momentum going, he went on to add an additional 6.90 points to his account, thus reaching a heat-total of 15.17 points.

Online publication focuses on the interaction between vascular disease, endocrinology, and metabolism

Philadelphia, PA-- (September 24, 2012) Wolters Kluwer Health is pleased to announce the publication of Cardiovascular Endocrinology, a new online, peer-reviewed journal committed to fostering effective collaboration between cardiologists and endocrinologists in addressing diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and related diseases and conditions. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), a part of Wolters Kluwer Health, is the publisher of record for the journal.

"The growing global prevalence of obesity-associated diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia makes it imperative that cardiologists, endocrinologists, and others have a forum for new treatment and therapeutic developments. The new journal aspires to provide this forum by ensuring that researchers and clinicians have access to research and opinion that bridges these disciplines," said Andrew J. Krentz, Editor-in-Chief of Cardiovascular Endocrinology.
