The Writers? Union of Canada invites writers to submit a piece of English language fiction or non-fiction, up to 2,500 words, to its 20th Annual Short Prose Competition for Developing Writers.
The competition aims to discover, encourage, and promote new writers of short prose.
?Every year of the Short Prose Competition has yielded some superb entries,? notes John Degen, the Union?s executive director. ?Previous finalists and winners have included such future luminaries as Alexander MacLeod, Shauna Singh Baldwin, Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer, and Lewis DeSoto.?
Ami McKay, former finalist for the award herself, and author of the bestselling novel The Birth House, will be one of the competition?s jurors.
The competition is open to Canadian residents who haven?t had a book published by a commercial or university press and who don?t have a contract with a book publisher.
A $2,500 prize will be awarded to the winner, and the winner and finalists? works will be submitted to three Canadian magazines for consideration. The deadline for entries is March 1, 2013.
